Screaming into the wind.
Today it is cold. The wind is whipping like mad. Oh, that we had a wind turbine up! I can almost see the electricity that we could be generating as the little bursts of snow go screaming by.
Speaking of screaming… I want to. If it wouldn’t get the dogs riled up, I might.
This morning began with the noise generated by one of the cats playing with a beheaded mouse at my bedside. When I took said mouse away (with a generous handful of paper towel - forgive my wanton disregard of the environment in this instance, but I am not touching a chewed upon mouse with my bare hand) one cat and two very curious dogs did their best to trip me as I disposed of it.
The tractor is still out of commission (my father is coming this weekend to teach me how to replace a water pump). The backhoe declined to start. The one automatic waterer way in the back pastures is still frozen.
I bundled up in my snowpants and ear flap hat to go to the shed and bring out my trusty sled. Three trips later, chores were done! I am getting frighteningly good at this.
My farrier (the person who trims the horses hooves and puts shoes on them when necessary) was supposed to come out today. She and I are quite good friends, and had made plans several days ago (normal clients have to book 6-8 weeks in advance as her schedule is quite full) to watch a couple of video taken of each of us riding and competing last summer and to get a few trims done.
Her truck wouldn’t start, so not only is she unable to come over, she also missed her chiropractic appointment. If you have any experience with riding horses, or as in her case, bending over to pick up and hold their legs while plying the tools of the trade whilst the 1000 plus pound animal either cooperates or chooses not to, you will understand how very important the chiropracter is in our lives. Poor lass, I shudder to think.
Speaking of chiropractic care, let us segue into another aspect of crazy horse ladyness.
Our horses recieve better care than we do. It is just a fact. We are headed round the bend (not that one, the next) when it comes to the care we provide for our equine buddies.
Every 6-8 weeks they have a pedicure. (I have never had a pedicure done by a professional.)
When needed, they recieve custom made shoes. (I have oe pair of custom made riding boots, now nearing 5 years of age.)
They get all sorts of vitamins, minerals, homeopathic remedies, supplements for everything from hoof health to joint support - all on a dialy basis. (I know I have a bottle of vitamins around here somewhere, but have never rememebered to take them daily.)
They also get chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, hydro therapy, poultices, support bandaging and so much more. I know each horse’s normal temperature, resting heart rate, respiration rate, and can tell if they are feeling unwell from a distance of 20 paces.
It is possible that they each have a more extensive “wardrobe” than I do, when one considers that each has their own saddle (these things are hars as heck to fit - almost no two horses will fit into the same saddle corectly), bridle, saddle pads, coolers, sheets, stable blankets, turnout blankets, halters, leads, protective leg boots, the list goes on.
At least I have my trusty ear flap hat!
