A Stable Personality: Life with horses

The story of a girl who bought the farm, the horses and a backhoe.

The Sun came out

by Billie on March 10th, 2008

Had a moderately good weekend, though the week itself ended with a bit more frustration than I had hoped for.

Mirelle actually got out of the fence.  No typical behaviour such as stealing grain in nieghboring pastures.  She got out and romped around the property.  Lerus became upset and broke out to be with her friend.  Brillar didn’t want to miss out on the fun and also escaped.

I was in the shower when Kevin arrived home to tell me the horses were out.  With still wet hair I threw on clothes suitable for the office and ran outside.  It took only 15 minutes to round up the wayward youth, but it seemed ever so much longer.  I am still mad at them.  My hair was frozen into blonde icicles, though most of it thawed on my way to work.

Mirelle and Lerus now live in the round pen which necessitates hauling water to them.  I spent another joyous Saturday trying in vain to figure out why the fence refuses to work properly.  Still no answers.  So, there it is.  The girls will just have to cope for a while.  Maybe with the projected warmer temperatures the snow will melt and the fence will come to life.

I did some shifting of horses in the back pastures.  Everyone was a bit riled by the changes, but settled into their new homes and have ceased pasture swapping for the time being.  Success!

The other exciting news onthe farm is that Tie Me Kangaroo Down (aka Brumby) is due to foal within the next month.  This will be my first ever foal.  Poor Brumby has gone from a moderately chunky mare to absolutely huge over the course of the past couple of days.  The poor thing looks as though she swallowed a zorb.

A couple of friends from work had convinced me to accompany them on a bowling outing Saturday evening.  Here I must interject that I really do hate bowling.  Passionately.  I am far too competitive to play a game at which I stink.  I am also far too busy to even comtemplate bowling on the kind of regular basis that one would have to in order to become competent.  Also, I hate it.

Needless to say, when I recieved a call late Friday night from a friend that called to let me know that Sunspot was going to be playing in Merrill, I knew that bowling was out - which just left me with the job of convincing the others that seeing a good band trumped the dread “sport”.

Both freinds readily agreed to acocmpany me to the bar in Merrill.  Score!  As always, the show was great fun.  Unlike the last time I had seen them, this time Mike kept nearly all of his clothes on and Ben could once again walk.  Wendy rocked as she always does.  The show started with one of my favorite tunes and ended with my request of Good Looking Corpse.  In my mind, any song that even mentions Sylvia Plath is a winner.  My friends were particularly fond of Sunspot’s tribute to Scott Bakula, no Mike, you are not Scott.

Dino,  my friend, the show was not the same without your presence.  Ben is particularly miffed.

I have to say that while the bar that hosted the band was nice, it was certainly not Scott Street.  Some of the old crowd were in attendance, but on the whole the people were of a completely different ilk.  A bit disconcerting.  Oh, how I lament Wausau’s loss.  The Pub was the only bar I have ever been even remotely comfortable in…

Since I am an established introvert, hanging out in bars has never been a high priority exercise for me, but as a music lover and a girl who just needs to experience some fun this winter, I have decided that visiting bars is acceptable (better than bowling or sitting at home).  I like my own company, but there are simply times that having other folks around is necessary for the preservation of sanity.

How cool do I feel that Mike wrote on my little blog! The music never disappoints, so no worries!
