Robbery + Bike = Sadness

by Abe Gabor on October 7th, 2007

The pharmacy robbery on Friday was cause for some alarm, especially considering that the guy ended up in our neighborhood – in that situation is it more nerve-wracking to be home or away from your home? But the “crime wave” didn’t stop there. I stopped at the Grand Theater on Friday night to visit with some coworkers and see a bit of the show. The night quickly went downhill when I was getting ready to leave only to find that my bike, which I had parked inside, was now nowhere to be found. At first I thought somebody was playing a joke on me, but as it turns out, over $150 was stolen from the dressing rooms that night during the performance, and my bike was apparently a bonus. Keep an eye out for it if you can, but it’s probably a lost cause:

  • 2002 grey/silver Giant Rainier (mountain bike)
  • silver Marzocchi Bomber fork
  • Avid disc brakes
  • Salsa Moto-Ace riser handlebar
  • Specialized Body Geometry Seat
  • grey Crank Brothers Candy SL clipless pedals
  • mismatched black rims
  • WTB Allterrainosaurous tires

Fortunately I have another bike to use as needed, but it saddens me to know that it’s not even safe to leave things unattended indoors.

I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your bicycle Abe, I pretty much doubt that your bike’s demise was part of a huge crime wave targeted at mountain bikes, the Grand Theater or the downtown area as a whole nonetheless. Was it locked even though inside the building? It seems IMO that this was a special bike with all of the custom parts included in the description, why wouldn’t you take those extra seconds to lock this valuable bike? Was it visible to the public?

It is never acceptable when crime hits close to you and your property, you need to be dillegent in the protection of your property now days. I’m sure that many of you never had to lock your doors/garages/bikes because you “never thought that it would happen to you”, “it is a safe neighborhood” or ” I’ll only be gone in a minute”. I am as guilty as the next person when it comes to this and I have been burned in the past. I learned this lesson the hard way also… details need not be disclosed for they don’t matter.

There is no “Crime Wave” in Wausau….plain and simple!

There is crime everywhere in the world, hell, Wausau is probably one of the safest places I’ve ever lived in my life which includes such safe havens such as Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Diego in California, Chicago, Milwaukee and for a short time Boston. I could make a very long list of crimes that do not seem to be a problem YET in Wausau and the Marathon County area, although in some ways it is almost worse to have that blanket of security that some in the area have succumbed to. It is a quiet, neighborly place to live and raise your chidren, but to think that this will not happen from time to time and possibly more than it should, is folly.

Many people cannot find work, are too lazy to work and some would rather turn to crime to fulfiil their monetary needs. They have no heart! They just don’t care about anyone but themselves and really could give a rat’s posterior about your loss. They saw an unattended and possibly unlocked cool bike parked, saw the opportunity and just without any thought to you, took it. Better than working 3 months of saving every last extra penny to actually buy it for themselves. Sad.

timothyp, thanks for your response. I encouraged Abe to post this article, as this is a site about life in Wausau, both the good and the bad. The list of parts was included for identification purposes in case any eagle-eyed enthusiasts on this site want to keep an eye out.

The bike was not visible to the public. It was indoors in the Grand’s loading dock (backstage), which is a staff/performer-only area. Likely the thief pillaged the dressing rooms and saw Abe’s bike as a bonus.

Just a terrible thing to happen, and please do not get me wrong. I was not trying to say that it was in any way Abe’s fault that this theft happened, just used his incident to present a few comments and observations.

I will keep my eyes open for his bike and I sincerely hope it gets back into the hands of its’ rightly owner.

Karma … it’ll come back to bite him in the arse soon enough.

Abe, I’m really sorry to hear about your bike (again). I’m just glad you didn’t get arrested when you went to the Grand on Saturday because of your backpack ; ) Anyway, I hope that guy gets kicked in the face…or caught so you get your bike back.
