Holiday Season Straight Ahead!
Today is the 311th day of 2007, with just 54 days remaining in the year - and only 48 shopping days until Christmas. Christmas? When did THAT start showing up on my radar?
My neighbors across the street spent last weekend stringing lights, and my mailbox is filled with holiday catalogs. There’s no denying it - the holiday season has just about arrived.
The year has been a tough one for my family, beginning with the loss of my father in January. An integral part of our lives, he is greatly missed as we pass through a year of “firsts” without him. Despite the overwhelming grief I still feel at his passing, I must admit the my spirits lift when I think of the upcoming season and everything our beautiful city has to offer.
Wausau Area Events does a fantastic job of kicking off the season with the holiday parade, scheduled this year for November 30th. The next day, another holiday staple for our family - Central Wisconsin School of Ballet presents the Nutcracker at the Grand Theatre - a production named one of the nation’s “nine most notable” in Newsweek magazine a few years back.
On Thursday, December 6th, the Wausau Conservatory hosts A Conservatory Christmas Carol, with wonderful holiday favorites led by the Choraliers and Choralation Choirs in the Great Hall on Artsblock at 5:30 - free for all ages. And it sure wouldn’t be Christmas without the annual Altenburgh Christmas show at the Grand on Friday the 14th with some of the area’s most talented musicians including the vocals of the fabulous Janet Planet.
My sister left the fold years ago to find her fortune in California. Year after year she has shaken her head at me, wondering what on earth we do here all winter long! But last year when she made the trip home to spend one last holiday season with our father, she had to admit Wausau’s got a great deal to offer.
So, bring on the bells, the parades, and the shows……though I’d be lying if I said I was looking forward to the snow. Let the holidays begin!

In addition to the Holiday Parade we are adding a fun run called the “Holiday Hustle.” As well as a window decorating contest for all of the River District Business. So after the parade check out all of the great windows on display! www.wausauareaevents.org
