16 Questions from a Vegan Sneaker Purchaser
So again, it is left up to me. Sigh. Here I sit, wondering about some stuff, but not really thinking about it too much, after all I am getting a new tattoo today. So that is nice, but often I am left to wonder…
- What do you think Sidney Poitier thinks everytime he see Eddie Murphy in that fat woman suit? Does race and the discussion of race matter in Wausau? Are the Hmong people (and that is an umbrella term I suppose in Wausau) the primary form of diversity?
- I have heard of this band Freedown, and was wondering if anyone has ever seen them live?
- I was always wondering about boathouses. On our lake up north a house has a boathouse; what is in there aside from boats? What about the winter?
- Where are the outdoor ice rinks in Wausau?
- Have you noticed an increase in CW-related stuff? Our hits are through the roof, and thank you for it. We would like some new contributions from strangers though, no one wants me blathering on about boats.
- How central to your life is your computer? Do you do your accounting on it? Your calendar? Do you use your cellphone as a data device for the World Wide Web?
- Is there a differance between Shopko and Target? When I was a boy Shopko was there, so it has been here a lot longer, and as a result I wonder if I hold it in less esteem?
- Who was your best friend in grade school? Are you still best friends? Mine was Sean Palecek. The smartest kid ever. I wish I had stayed his friend. I miss Sean. He took me to Telemark once. I was allergic to the horses. We stayed in some insurance people’s joint. It was awesome. They had a tunnel, and a pool. Who is your best friend now? Do you think that we as adults (not using that to describe me of course) have them?
- What was your favorite vacation? One that you actually went on. Why? What vacation do you miss going on?
- What girl do you wish you kissed growing up? I have two. Kristin McCandless, the tennis icon of DC Everest. And TR Ambord. TR and I worked at the Rothschild Pool together. I guess I totally missed that she was really pretty and cool, all the time trying to learn to do a gainer off the high dive.
- Did you own Guess jeans? I never did. I have some cool Bugle Boy ones, and never had parachute pants.
- What is really wrong with Wausau? Anything? Are we all just complaining because we don’t have World of Warcraft guilds to join? And what about the crime thing; what is that about?
- Prior to Pearl Harbor, were we in the war in Europe, or had we stayed out of that as well? How did we get troops to Europe or the Pacific? Boats? How did they protect those troops or did countries just agree upon not killing trooper carrying ships?
- Have you ever bailed anyone out of jail?
- Do you have a secret life? I mean something that you do that like your work friends don’t know about? Not like something your ashamed of, but do you think that you are one person at work, and someone else at home?
Thats it for today.

1. Perhaps Poitier is horrified, or perhaps, having just turned 80 yesterday, he takes it in stride (he’s so classy!). We will, I think, continue to become more diversified here in Wausau.
2. Yes, I have seen them live. They have a fabulous lead guitar player.
3. Why don’t we call garages, “car houses”?
4. There’s one downtown. There used to be one by Thom Field.
5. I enjoy your blathering.
6. I spend too much time on my computer, only use the computer calendar for v, v important reminders, use an old-fashioned wall calendar.
7. Tar-jay is vastly superior to Shopko. Really. When I moved here, someone warned me, “There’s no shopping here.” But I said, “There’s a Target!”
8. My best friend in grade school was Lisa Jean Wyatt. I lost track of her about 15 years ago. My “oldest” friend Sallie and I have been friends since we were 10, and we still are very good friends. Real friendship is hard. Takes a lot of nurture, time and energy. Lots of adults seem content with lots of “acquaintances” or use the term “friend” more loosely than I do. It takes a long time to make a good friend (I read that somewhere, it’s not mine.)
9. I love Mackinac Island. It feels like another place, another “pace” and another time.
10. Um, gosh, there aren’t really any girls that come to mind that I wish I’d kissed. Boys maybe… ;)
11. Never owned Guess jeans.
12. I like Wausau. What’s wrong with it today is there’s too much frigging snow and it’s too frigging cold. I’m hoping that’s temporary.
13. You need to read some history, Dino. Watch “Band of Brothers” at least. Go chat up a WWII vet while you still can.
14. No, but I know people who have been arrested.
15. Yes, but I can’t tell you about it, or I’ll have to kill you.

1. Poitier wates his time with Murphy? Blimey! I am your primary form of diversity, kneel before me, blatherskite!
2. Never heard of them.
3. In the winter they become Icehouses!
4. I only ever notices the one downtown.
5. No, congratulations and good luck.
6. Very central. No, no and lastly, no - because they charge stupid money for crappy web connections on inferior devices (No I haven’t got a Stevejobophone!)
7. Target has strange soda flavours while Shopko hasn’t.
8. I hated my school and all the idiot kids there. My friends were all skateboarders/punk rockers outside school.
9. Brunei, in Borneo. I got to see the rain forest before it was made in to Target stationary.
10. None spring to mind.
11. Never heard of them.
12. There is no more wrong with Wausau than anywhere else. As the education system crumbles around us, the criminal classes are getting dumber and more visible.
13. Go to the library! They have a history section. If it is too cold, maybe Google will assist. (Shakes head at education system yet again)
14. I have helped but wasn’t the only bailer.
15. There are no secrets here, especially in a strong wind.

1) Who? Wausau is and has been much more culturally and enthnically diverse than you seem to know. A mosque is in yalls future
6) Without it I could not work.
7) Huge difference. Shopko is a minor Midwestern retailer based in Green Bay and operates around 150 or so stores. They have really been struggling in the last few years. Target is a powerful national brand that operates like cockroaches appear. Target is the new Wal-Mart. Be afraid.
8) Adult friendships seem much more fucessed on “angles.” Kids just do whatever–like the “smartest person ever” befriending Dino.
10) No regrets. I kissed’em all!
11) No.
12) Wausau seems just as it should be; economic stresses are everywhere. Crime is a function of these economic stresses but also a result of the gains and growth that have been the theme of the last decade.
13) Wow.
14) Knowing about bail bonds should not be underestimated.
15) Ever hear of monkey fighting? A couple of Rhesus monkeys, a loaded handgun, pair of brass knuckles, and a box of whiskey. . . perhaps I have said too much.

I agree with Janeal. Dino, you question too much.
1. I think Wausau is getting more diverse, but it’s not there yet.
4. Every winter I say I’m going to go skating, and I never do. Where are the best outdoor rinks? Indoor skating is lame.
5. Congrats! I guess for now we’ll have to settle for your boat babble.
6. It’s like my second brain. I would die without my computer. The only thing I don’t do on it is my calendar. I need to physically cross things off of a list. I had web service on my cell phone, but it costed $20 and was so hard to use it was nearly useless.
7. Not even in the same class. Target is awesome. Shopko blows.
8. My best friend from childhood is Lisa, who I met when I was 3. She was riding her tricycle on one side of the street, and I was on the other. She yelled, “My name is Lisa, what’s yours?!” We’ve been friends ever since, except for a few months in 7th grade when some middle school drama got in the way. As an adult, I have several close friends, but I don’t like to use the term “best friend” as an adult, because it implies that one friend is better than another and I love them all for different reasons. I can call Shawn my ‘best friend’, because we hang out every day and tell each other everything. So that’s cool.
9. We haven’t traveled since the kids were born. Shawn and I went to Disney World for our honeymoon, and it was great. It was like being on another planet for a week, which was great after all of the wedding stress. But my favorite would have to be San Diego, when we drank fruity drinks on the beach all day and then our friends bought us matching tattoos for a wedding present.
11. Yes. I had to buy them with my babysitting money, and then my sister wore them and stretched them out with her wide butt and got them all smelling like cigarette smoke. She left them in stinky, crumpled heap under my bed and I couldn’t find them for weeks. I’m still bitter.
12. Wausau is too far from any metropolitan area. I would like to take the whole region and move it down to within an hour of Milwaukee. That will probably never happen, so I have just accepted it.
14. No. And I probably wouldn’t either. I’m a b—- that way.
15. My New Year’s Resolution this year was to stop doing this very thing. I don’t mean to, but I have a segmented life. People tend to only get to know one side of me, so I have been slowly making changes to make sure people get to know more about me.

You wonder big, Dino. Keep the Qs down, man. Yet, I can’t resist.
1. I hate seeing EM in a fat suit. I can’t imagine Poitier’s thoughts on it. Race matters in Wausau. We’ve had such a severe lack of diversity in our community history that even the smallest saturation causes large reactions. Dino, get outside more…we have many diverse groups expanding in our fair metropolitan arena.
2. Nope.
3. Boathouses are great for making out in (remember the summer camp movie with Kristy McNichol?!). And big spiders like to live there.
4. I used to be an ice rink attendant! They were located at many school areas around Wausau. Jeffereson School, Grant, Pleasantview Park, and more. I really enjoy the one downtown on the square.
5. I’ve seen CW listed on Top Blog lists at other sites. Cool.
6. My computer at work is crucial. My computer at home is beneficial. I don’t do web on my phone.
7. Shopko is trying to improve its brand to rank up to Target. It never will. Although Shopko now has the Aspirus Walk-In clinic…which gives it a whole new twist.
8. Heidi Berg. My best friend growing up. She even kicked me in the teeth and we stayed friends. We’ll be friends for life, even though we don’t talk for years, and then suddenly find a reason to call. I have many close friends via my walks through life as an aspiring adult.
9. I love all of my vacations simply because they were “vacations”! As an adult, I look back and now enjoy those family trips we were taken on as kids where my mom dressed my sister and I in the same outfits…to the Dells, camping in FL, up north, etc. I enjoyed my “business” trips to Europe, Croatia, the Caribbean. I miss my shark dive trips with my friends to Freeport, Bahamas. Yeah, diving with sharks swarming around you…now that’s a vacation.
10. I was too shy growing up.
11. Levis.
12. Wausau has a good quality of life. That’s what I’ve always said. I’ve lived in several big cities and have come to appreciate that aspect. Now that I’m back in Wausau, however, I miss the “opportunities” of a big city. But I truly love the culture that is developing in Wausau. I do wish we had a warmer climate.
13. Start reading or spark up a convo with some elderly folk or a history professor. There are a few veteran regulars at the Chatterbox that would probably bend your ear if you inquired.
14. No.
15. Secret life?

1. I still know plenty of people in Wausau who have no time for diversity. I’ve seen it first hand. It’s a shame, and shoot me for it but it leaks out of the Christian community as well.
2. Freedown is a mystery to me.
3. In the winter you just throw a Mr. Heater underneath, drill some holes, and start fishing for gills.
4. I don’t know, but I know I have ice-skated in Wausau.
5. I might count as a stranger.
6. I haven’t shut off my computer for several years.
7. The only difference is that Shopko sucks.
8. My best friend was a guy named Andy Dowty. Down the road I screwed him over. It is one the largest and most painful regrets of my life. My best friend now is without a doubt my wife Kristen, she is amazing.
9. Funny how this question flowed from the previous one. My favorite vacation was to Isle Royale, backpacking with my Dad, my brother, and the aforementioned Andy Dowty. It was incredible.
10. I would have loved to kiss Stephanie Smith from good old DCE. She just oozed purity. I did kiss Penny Foust though, an extremely close second in my book. God, it took me years to get over her. I hope she has had a good life.
11. I had GUESS jeans and I rolled them up.
12. Wausau is a city that exports children completely decimated by the self-esteem movement.
13. Uh …
14. No.
15. The only secret I have, is trying to hide the secrets I have.

10. Dino, did your wish-you-kissed-her Ambord girl live on Birch in Rothschild? They were just down the road from me before moving a few years ago.
