Cool Dude: Postponed
With the election taking place yesterday, I decided to take a week off from celebration. It sort of brings the past couple of weeks together though, Tipple then Hadley, then the voters. So rather than move on, we’ll post the results, and you can see the turnout and how your future will be affected by your action or inaction.
Here are the results, thanks to the City of Wausau.

Democracy reigned. But 76% of the voting public decided to stay in out of the reign. I’d guess, though, that close to 100% of the populace had some opinions about the candidates and issues. One great way to express your opinion: vote.

Voting is a prerogative not a mandate. A lot of people couldn’t care one way or the other whom the mayor is…or their alderman or county supervisor. You can lament that someone doesn’t vote…but I won’t.

Barry, “Mister Easy Going Guy,” would you lament if only 18% voted instead of 24%, or if it had been 11% … or 7%? Is there a level where you might be concerned about voter apathy? What if nobody voted? Okay by you? Given a chance, would you encourage anyone to vote? Is your lack of lament a sign of another sort of apathy? Voting isn’t a mandate, sure, but it does carry a certain aspect of civic duty. When the populace displays an unconnectedness to policies and politicians and processes, then policies and politicians and processes can drift away from the interests of the populace. And then who will served? One guess. I think you’re just tugging our chain a bit.

Well my good friend Tom, I do not fear ‘apathy’ at this time — a-pathos (pathos = to feel) = apathy means devoid of feeling. The apathy on the part of the public occurred over last 12 years or so - and that has led us to this point, whereby we do feel. We feel because we suffer from the incompetence, fraud and negligence of the guardian class that maintained power the last 12 years or so - through the latter part of the Clinton era (the public philandering years) through the entirety of the Bush era (the years debased by superstition).
We suffer because of war and poverty and the loss of identity which we had, and nostalgically wish to get back yet never will.
In the presidential primaries, we have had record voter turnouts. In the presidential election new records will be be set for voter percentage.
About 5 years ago I wrote an editorial in the WDH called ‘Creeping Barbarism’ whereby I predicted most elegantly what would happen. Jim Rosenberg actually wrote a counter-editorial on the same editorial page. What do you think Jim, whom would we say was most correct?
No Tom, as I write this we do not live in an apathetic time.
regards, Barry

Okay, Barry, my un-met friend … perhaps “disengagement” is more apropos. My personal sense of failure on the part of government goes much further back than 12 years. For me, it’s more like 40+ years. For others, it’s even longer. Many, many, many bad choices, here and “over there.” Many choices, the polar opposites of what my own heart and head would dictate. As usual, I’ll vote in the presidential race, and, as always, suspecting that those in my field of choice are corrupted and doomed to pursue a too-familiar course, driven by momentous momentum.
The “creeping barbarism” has been slouching along for quite a long time, and now we in our own “Bethlehem” feel its cold shadow. Is this a reasonable progression: Feel — Cold — Numb — Apathy?
W.B Yeats
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in the sands of the desert.
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Captivated, I’ve read a bit about this poem - written in 1920 it was a foretelling prophesy of the horrors of WWII, culminating in Auschwitz and Hiroshima/Nagasaki. If Yeats is correct Tom, there is hope…perhaps the widening gyre is constricting again and the sphinx guards the keep rather than tearing through flesh…perhaps the ugliest of days are behind us…

The poem always gives me the willies when I read it. Not just because of what it may have foretold originally, but for what it still seems to convey to me: the monstrous “bill collector” creeping inexorably forward with eyes on our peaceful homes and innocents.
It sets the stage:
“Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;”
It addresses the supporting actors:
“The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.”
It introduces the antagonist:
“And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?”
And leaves us with no protagonist; just hapless victims.
And it reminds me of today.

Barry … I read in Wikipedia that Yeats’ viewed history as cyclic. With that in mind, your surmise:
“perhaps the ugliest of days are behind us…”
is correct and incorrect at the same time, because in cycles, that which is behind us is also inevitably in front of us.

Yes and no, the epoch was a 2 thousand year cycle…and the last one didn’t turn out so bad, did it? If the species makes it another 2000 years, that would exceed the expectations of many - and then our progeny would have to figure things out in 4,000 AD…

Yes, but what abut the influence of increased velocity? The pace of change in the past 200 years has by far outstripped the changes of the previous 1800 years. Similarly, the pace of the past 40 years has by far eclipsed the change rate of the past 200 years. Increased velocity, as a result of the forces of societal momentum. Think in terms of rolling a rock down a wee hill, then rolling it down a mountain. If that rock from the wee hill hits you, it might leave a bruise. If the same rock from the mountain hits you, you’re paste. It’s the “per second per second” effect, accelerating logrithmically. It’s “slouching” faster, maybe.

Has it sped up that much? Maybe we oughtta slow down. Try to build some identity. Deny technology its influence. Perhaps a way to do this would be to cultivate oneself over time with respect to the fine arts and other various practices like cooking or mathematics, literacy and other forms of active play. The passivity wrought by technology could then be resisted…no slouching, stand up straight!

— Tom’s concern of speed-up can be seen in Edgar Allen Poe’s The Maelstrom…we need to ride the technological wave…rather than Yeats, perhaps Emerson, Days:
Daughters of Time, the hypocritic Days,
Muffled and dumb like barefoot dervishes,
And marching single in an endless file,
Bring diadems and fagots in their hands.
To each they offer gifts after his will,
Bread, kingdoms, stars, and sky that holds them all.
I, in my pleached garden, watched the pomp,
Forgot my morning wishes, hastily
Took a few herbs and apples, and the Day
Turned and departed silent. I, too late,
Under her solemn fillet saw the scorn.”
