7 questions to ponder so Dino can catch a break

by Citizen Wausau on April 18th, 2008

[A Note: These questions come to us from someone else this week. Thanks friend.]

1. Do you watch TV? Have a favorite show? I tend to glom on to one show every few years and then it will be canceled. I loved “Alias,” now I love “House.” (I may actually be in love with “House.”) Other than that, I tend to be a renter of DVDs.

2. Do you think the scandals in local government are becoming more frequent? Is this a trend?

3. Do you think Reality TV is just a phase, like variety shows were so fab in the 60s, and shows like “Love Boat” and “Fantasy Island” were all the rage to showcase washed-up stars?

4. It’s spring (I think). Time for baseball. Are you optimistic that this is the year the Brewers will make the playoffs? Is there another professional team you like besides the Brewers? I am quite fond of the Mets, and have a soft spot for the Rangers. But I really enjoy watching the Brewers. I especially like going to a Brewers game. Mmmmmm….hot dogs.

5. Do you read for pleasure? Do you have a guilty pleasure? (Romances? Spy novels? Westerns?) I really like vampire fiction (not so much Anne Rice, though). I just started a new series by an author named Laurell K. Hamilton. The first book in the series is called, “Guilty Pleasures.”

6. Do you collect anything? I collect penguins. I had one kidnapped last summer, it was a traumatizing experience. The heroine in the book I’m reading (Anita Blake, vampire slayer) collects penguins.

7. What was the first thing you ever remember wanting to be when you grew up? When I was in 2nd grade, I wanted to be a lifeguard. You know, just work summers.

    1. I don’t watch broadcast TV unless I’m at work. But at my home my television doesn’t get cable, satellite or even off the air programming. I strictly do DVDs (or the occasional VHS) and video games. If a rare nugget of goodness comes out television, I’ll pick up the DVDs and watch it at my own leisure and without commercial “breaks.” I just don’t like scheduling my life around watching some that’s 1/3 advertisements.

    2. Scandal in any power structure goes way back. To think that it’s exclusive to government is to be naive. To think that it’s recent is equally so.

    3. I hope so. I hope so.

    4. I really only follow sports that are called football in some part of the world. So if it’s not one of those two, it’s just not my thing.

    5. I do read for pleasure. Sadly, not often enough to have a guilty pleasure. I only read about a book a month or so and need to save that time for truly good stuff. Now guilty pleasures in the form of films, that I’ve got in spades. :D

    6. Not a thing. I’ve never really saw the value in owning something just to have a lot of it in a large variety.

    7. A police officer. How things changed!

    1. Yup. I’m a sucker for Top Chef, Project Runway, Hell’s Kitchen.
    2. Scandals are always happening….they just don’t always get detected.
    3. Again, I hope reality TV is just a phase. Then I can finally stop watching that crap!
    4. Love stadium food, but baseball’s not my bag. I do enjoy the ambiance of the Woodchucks games, however, and I try to go to at least one Brewers, Cubs, or Twins game every season.
    5. Yes, I read for pleasure. Dean Koontz. I likes me my horror books!
    6. I collect kokopellis and lip balms. Bonne Bell Lip Smackers to be exact. I have thousands….
    7. I wanted to be an stage actress. Still do. Guess I settled for being a drama queen….

    1. Love Top Chef, Hell’s Kitchen, Survivor, Dancing w/Stars and Amazing Race and can’t do without Grey’s Anatomy and Desperate Housewives.

    2. I think scandals have happened for years and for everyone we know about it makes you wonder about the other 10 you don’t know….nothing better than a great conspiracy theory.

    3. I think reality tv is a chance for you to witness humanity at it’s best and most times at it’s worst.

    5. Love to read…love anything by Susan Wiggs, Debbie Macomber, Luanne Rice or Carla Neggers….all mystery romance writers who write about real women with their blemishs as well as their endearing traits…not typical barbie doll cookie cutter woman…

    6. I used to collect porcelain clowns and have them all packed away in boxes in the basement but can’t bear the thought of getting rid of them even though I moved from that collection years ago. I collect snowman now…that’s been my thing for the past few years.

    7. I can remember wanting to be a teacher for a long time but ended up on a much different career path. I love my job and it’s very fulfilling but very different than what I thought of in the innocence of my youth…and this question makes me wonder what my life would have been like if I chose that path????

    1. I love TV more than anything. From Antiques Road Show, to reality, to every sport imaginable.

    2. Scandal. Never heard of it.

    3. Reality is just that.

    4. I am a huge Brewer fan. I think they have a serious shot if they can stay healthy, Gagne pitches like Cordero did last year, and Mike Cameron is as advertised. Go Crew.

    5. I read my computer. One huge book.

    6. I collect pets. I have four. Three that meow and one that barks.

    7. I wanted to be a pro-athlete.

    1. I am a channel flipper…I watch 2 minutes of every show…unless I hit upon something really good on HGTV that’ll teach me to redecorate my dining room with a handfull of twigs, rubber bands and a couple of bent teaspoons. Then I’m mesmerized.

    2. Scanals? What scandals?

    3. I find reality tv disturbing in a social sense.

    4. Love the hot dogs.

    5. I wish I had more time for enjoyment reading (which, come to think of it..I could be doing that instead of doing this), and so I’ve just started my first ever mystery thriller, that promises to be “fast, fresh, funny, and outrageously suspenseful…” It’s called “Monkeewrench” by P.J. Tracy (a mother/daughter writing team) and according to the guy at Barnes & Noble, I’ll love it. I’m on page 23.

    6. I am definately a gatherer. I collect vintage salt & pepper shakers, old fliptop lid picnic baskets, antique roosters, rusty garden tools, and old Jesus art. And that’s all I’ll admit to at the moment.

    7. Okay, don’t laugh, but I can remember wanting to be one of Santa’s elves…at the north pole…in the wrapping department. That dream did not come true.

Thanks for the fill-in questions!…I was starting to suffer withdrawal.

    1. I don’t know how much I actually watch TV, but it is on a lot of the time. The 24-hour news and information channels are the best thing that ever happened to TV for people like me. It’s financial news during the business day and regular news the rest of the time. My daytime emmy for “Best Rant of 2007″ goes to Jim Cramer:

    2. I like Birkenstocks… Oh, that was SCANDALS, not sandals. Never mind!

    3. Reality TV is a way to keep from having to pay writers. It reads that way to me. Yes, it’s phase, (like disco or something.)

    4. The Brewers look promising. They have looked promising before, but this time it’s different, right? :)

    5. I read stuff because I have to. I wouldn’t say that I read for pleasure all that often, but I never read for pain.

    6. I collect hotel key cards, ticket stubs and official brass souvenirs of the realm in various locations. All of this will be thrown into a box and the entire collection with be sold for a quarter at a garage sale someday.

    7. I wanted to be the trail boss on a cattle drive and keep them doggies movin’. Don’t try to understand ‘em. Just rope, roll and brand ‘em. Soon I’d be living high and wide…

    1) I try to watch BBC’s Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares a few times week. I am glued to CNBC nearly all day. And the baseball games are great–Rangers, Cubs, Astros.

    2) Frequency? I like Wausau’s scandals. They are about all that makes the WDH worth reading.

3)Like that Top Chef show. If that is reality TV, than I have a confession to make.

    4) Caught the Rangers home opener. We abducted a kid from school and took him out to the park. It was a great day, but the Rangers are pathetic. Brewers look good–I like that Gabe “Welcome Back” Kapler.

    5) Reading for pleasure is a daily occurence. CW.

    6) Golf score cards. Vintage post cards. Refrigerator magnets representing states or cities that have thermometers.

    7) I never wanted to be anything. I have achieved this lofty dream.

    7)

    1. Not much of a television watcher unless it has to do with cooking, my chosen profession. I have learned more in the last couple of years watching Bravo, Discovery Channel and Food Network than I did in the previous 10 years or so. Otherwise, I’ll watch an occasional sporting event, comedy special, not much more than that.

    2. Sorry state of affairs now days in government citywide, statewide, countrywide…etc. Scandal has become way too prevelent in the modern world, but as stated it is nothing new.

    3. Reality TV …. waste of time except for the cooking shows like Top Chef and Hell’s Kitchen of course.

    4. I’ve been a rabid Brewers fan since day one. Love the game of baseball and EVERY year I think the Brew Crew has what it takes to win it all.

    5. I’ve been reading Uncle John’s Bathroom Readers since they started publishing them, just got the 20th Anniverary Edition. Odd thing, I’ve never taken one into the bathroom, that is for the Daily Herald.

    6. Seattle Pilots and Milwaukee Brewers Memorabilia….I have boxes and boxes of stuff…everything from every seat cushion, pennant and pocket schedule they ever produced to a brick from old County Stadium. I also collect metal advertising signs, again most in boxes.

    7. I remember when I was a young lad, I wanted to be a castaway on a deserted island. Why? Only a shrink could tell you that… I still wish from time to time to be isolated like that for a short time, back to nature, survival, all that kind of stuff.
