5 Questions to Ponder While Trying to Put On a Pair of Waders

by Dino Corvino on May 30th, 2008 • 13 Comments »

  1. What is your morning ritual? Some folks NEED coffee. I do not. I have found though, as I am losing weight, I need to eat in the first hour.
  2. Who is the most significant rock and roll band of all time? Some would argue that rock and roll is so much of a waste of time, but others would say the Beatles changed the world. So, who was the most significant?
  3. Do you own a passport? When was the last time you used it?
  4. Have you read or heard if the Immel report came out to the public yet? Or has that been …

A Wellness Challenge Scavenger Hunt

by Cheryl Mathis on May 29th, 2008 • 4 Comments »

I have a fun one for you. This week as an incentive to get out of the house and get your body moving, I present a scavenger hunt.

Wander around your neighborhood, maybe a 10-block radius, and find the following items:

Something purple that starts with C. A purple cow?
Something yellow that starts with S. A yellow submarine?
Something green that starts with either E or H. Green eggs and ham?
Something red that starts with either R or H. A little red riding hood?
Something blue that starts with M. A blue moose?

This challenge will accomplish a couple of things. It’ll get you moving. …

One Mother Against Drunk Driving

by Cheryl Mathis on May 26th, 2008 • 7 Comments »

We took a detour on our way home from Minocqua this weekend. We thought it was just to avoid the deadlock on 51 and enjoy some scenery, but I think there was a higher purpose.

As we were meandering along, a car pulled out down the road in front of us. After the first couple of swerves over the centerline, we slowed and held our breath. Maybe they were just buckling up or tuning the radio. A minute later, they drifted over the centerline again. We turned off our audiotape and kept vigil behind the car. When it happened again, I …

6 Questions to Use in Avoiding Lyme Disease

by Dino Corvino on May 23rd, 2008 • 18 Comments »

I guess, as I go to the woods, like Antler or that dude at Walden, I am reminded that laptops, no matter how cool, matter little in the woods.  That a good blackberry, while cool to the kids on twitter, means little when you have leaves for pillows and might just occasionally need to poop outside.

  1. I reject the concept or belief that Wausau is just another Mayberry. That being said, do you think the recent scandals, is that even the correct term, have diminished the role of Mayor Tipple, Mike Morrissey, Bill Nagle or the City Council?  While many people …

Daycare Woes Worry Mom

by Cheryl Mathis on May 22nd, 2008 • No Comments »

I’ve been a stay-at-home mom since last September, just before my daughter was born and joined my son in our wild and crazy household. For most of my life, I wanted to be a SAHM. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” “A mommy.”

For the first year and a half of my son’s life, I worked, and we sent Ben to daycare. We picked one that had flexible hours, decent rates and came recommended by a friend. We loved the teachers, and our son seemed comfortable there.

When I was expecting our second child, we decided that I …

Where Articulate Discussion Goes to Die

by Shawn Sullivan on May 21st, 2008 • 8 Comments »

I’m a lurker. I like to look at message boards and blogs and just watch. Sometimes, I feel unqualified to add to a discussion, or my points have already been made by someone else. Other times, I don’t feel overly compelled to add to the discourse.

Then, there’s the Wausau Daily Herald Message Board.

I just want to say up front, that this is no indictment of the WDH moderators or employed contributors to the boards. I respect their attempts to mediate disputes and make sure that the entire thing doesn’t devolve into adult third-grade. Unfortunately, at times …

6 Questions Inspired by The Fly Girls on In Living Color

by Dino Corvino on May 16th, 2008 • 4 Comments »

So I guess, some of the hardest rejection is that from a volunteer agency. I know in most cases, these are folks doing good and are just looking to fill slots, but it still bothers me. It still makes me angry for wanting to help out.

Summer is here, and that means so many things. Car windows open, sleeping under a sheet and not a blanket, so many things.

  1. If you had to pick, what is the one song, the only song, that is the summer theme song for you? What song makes you think of summer, and …

Fling It for the CW Wellness Challenge

by Cheryl Mathis on May 16th, 2008 • No Comments »

Living consciously in your own body, the one you are stuck with, takes some energy. So many of us live in our heads. We read and we write, we watch TV and talk to friends, we eat. All done with our heads for the most part. But what we do above the necks has a direct effect on our bodies, either from what we’re thinking and talking about, from what we’re watching and reading, and certainly from what we’re putting in our mouths.

I encourage all of you to start living in your body again. Feel it move, the muscles ripple, …

Dandelions Cause Ruminations

by Cheryl Mathis on May 16th, 2008 • 6 Comments »

The other day when I was pushing my children around the neighborhood in a stroller, I stopped and stooped next to my two-year-old son in the front seat.

“Look, Ben! Dandelions!”

I carefully gathered a toddler-sized fistful of the yellow bits of sunshine and presented them to Ben for him to explore and admire. A quiet “wow” look spread across his face, and then he stuck one in his mouth, quickly pulling it out, disgusted by the taste.

I was lost in the sentimentality of dandelions. I remembered my first fistful of dandelions lovingly plucked by Mikey Rogers when I was five as …
