Ode To A Cheeseburger

by Shawn Sullivan on June 3rd, 2008

I had the best bacon cheeseburger today.  It had a ton of bacon, a thick patty of beef, and a soft Kaiser roll.  It was hot and juicy and I believe it to be the best bacon cheeseburger I’ve ever had.  Now here’s where it gets a bit odd.  I wasn’t at Applebee’s, The Back-When Café, or other established Wausau eateries.  No, it came from Town Line Market.

I grew up here, but it was only a year ago that a co-worker turned me on to this little treasure on Town Line Road.  Known to me mostly as a small grocer and meat market, I had no idea that they offered lunchtime fare, including an assortment of freshly prepared hot sandwiches.  The object of my affection is known as the “Heart Healthy” bacon cheeseburger.  I can only assume it’s their clever spin on the term.  I highly recommend you check them out.

Now, my intent here is not to completely undermine Cheryl and the CW Wellness Challenge, but to point out the “diamonds in the rough” that are probably all around the Wausau area.  Help me out and tell me what else I (and others) may be missing.

There was a burger joint in downtown Fort Worth I used to frequent. They’d sell thru windows to the sidewalk or you could walk in and sit at a counter. Smoke billowing from the grill about 2 feet away from you. They’d write down your order on the laminate countertop with a pencil and then rub it off with their hand. You could have a burger or cheeseburger. You could have onions (raw or fried). You could have mustard or Tabasco. But never … NEVER … did they offer ketchup. Didn’t carry it. Ever. No lettuce, no tomato slices, no bacon, no pickles, no fries. Oh, you could opt for a catfish sandwich. And they carried bagged chips. And cold coke in bottles. This is one of my favorite-ever places to dine. Exquisite!

Another happy surprise… the pulled pork sandwiches at George’s. Holy crap, those things are orgasmic.

As far as the Wellness Challenge goes, I don’t see why you can’t combine the two. We treat ourselves to ice cream at least once a week, but we walk there. We’re a little over a mile from the Tasty Treat, so we don’t feel as bad about wolfing down a cone if we had to walk so far to get it.

After eating a giant cheeseburger or other “naughty” hunk of food, I try to do some stretching or yoga afterwards to help my body digest it quickly.

I have had a couple sandwiches from Townline, but never a burger. I stopped by today to try one, but the grill was down (note: the guy behind the counter said burgers are available from about 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.). I ordered a BL (bacon and lettuce) and it was fabulous.

I recently had a Chatterbox burger for the first time - wow. We also like Hiawatha for dinner - I dream about their spinach salad. I go to Downtown Grocery nearly every day for lunch. Never been to George’s - got to get over there.

If you ever pass though Coeur D’ Alene Idaho. The Hudson Family runs a famly hamburger shop for over a hundred years just hamburgers and cheeseburgers. Pickles, onion sliced raw, pie and that is it. But it sounds like your grocer. At noon time this place is two deep waiting of a stool to sit at the counter.
