Two Questions on the Fourth of July
It’s the Fourth of July. A birthday. Honestly I have taken the day off from all of this electronic stuff, and I spent the day cleaning and doing yoga. Tomorrow I am going to the hill and then throwing with my friend Sullie. Aside from that, holidays mean very little to me. I thought I would try to get this to you, and maybe some answers would come my way.
- If you had to explain what this country is to an alien or a time traveler, how would you do it? What would the one word answer be? Do you think big country discussions about patriotism can be boiled down to local government? Do we call on people elected to serve in Washington with a different reverence than we do for local officials?
- What is your favorite holiday? For me, I have no real concept of them, as I was raised by wolves, but some folks have intense holiday traditions.

1. I would say we are a flawed group of people with mixed allegiances, but for the most part, we care enough about ideas like democracy and freedom to keep the government machine running. One word? Opportunity. — I think we prefer our Washington officials to have a bigger scope of what is going on in the world. Our local gov’t official need to know that we like our curbs maintained and our taxes low.
2. After today, I’d say my favorite day is Independence Day. I had a fabulous day full of family and fun. A 5K race that the vast majority of my family (including the kids) participated in, followed by a picnic at my sister’s house. This evening, we sat in a long row of lawn chairs on her lawn and watched the neighbors shoot of fireworks. Now a bonfire with smores. The kind of memories-in-the-making family fun that makes me feel vital and energized.

1. Hypocritical
2. Christmas Eve was always the big one. We get together with my dad’s side of the family and have a good time. My dad’s side is just crazy awesome on so many levels, getting around 30 to 50 Polish people together for a party is always a good idea.

1) ineffectual
2) Wing Wednesday. With each round of golf at the club, a player receives a half-dozen wings and a free pint. This was a close runner up to Thursday–each player has the opportunity to lose money to me per hole and then per aggregate strokes for the round. Often referred to as, “When that assh*le takes our money on Thursday.” (No, it doesn’t slip off the tongue like Wing Wednesday but it does have a certain charm) Not national holidays quite yet, but why not dream big.
