A few Questions on this July 11th

by Dino Corvino on July 11th, 2008

I am feeling sort of tired, in an extended sort of tired way. Not sure how to describe it, but on the verge of becoming sleepy, but knowing that I am not sleepy tired. Just a general sense of blah. Summer time is exhausting, and bickering brings me down even more.

Though one has to admit, we live in true times … interesting times, maybe. But one can never tell if the sense of interestingness is just a put on, hoping that this guy is the next Jimi Hendrix, and that the song we just heard is an anthem. We hope that our times are the times of legend, Seattle in the early ‘90s, Hip Hop in NYC in the late ‘70s, whenever Hendrix went to London.

More often than not, we live in times that are forgettable, unless someone writes them down.

  1. As it has been reported, Mr. Nagle will be retiring in August. Mr. Nagle is the City Attorney and HR Director. His job is directly influenced by the Jasurda case. His job was to supervise Mike Morrissey, the subject of said lawsuit. Mike Morriesey has retired, and now Nagle has left. What sort of perception does this cast, when all of the players in this situation are jumping ship, rather than being publicly accountable? How does our Mayor react?
  2. With the new City Council, Mr. Forrest essentially wanted to enact a coup in the castle with the veto and change of power structure. Many people on both teams heralded this as a leadership that would finally stand for the people. Lately though, your City Council President has been quiet as a church mouse. Given the exodus of professional staff, would you prefer your leadership have a more vocal role? For example, in the fall and winter and spring, the City Council meets twice a month, but in the summer only meets once. Given the stress applied to the city, should we not see them return to two meetings a month and do the work of the people?
  3. Anne Werth has been named interim or temporary or grand poobah in transition of the Development Office. I think I read that she has worked for the city for 31 years. I have only been alive 6 more years than that. Given the fact that Anne is a long-serving, highly qualified person, when will she be named Director? How many weeks will go by until the city names someone to the most important position in town? Have any applications come in?
  4. Anyone seen Tipple? I can’t imagine this is fun for him. I hope he is okay.
  5. Did you buy a scooter yet?
  6. I just got a copy of my high school graduating class email list, and it is an abomination. Why do people use hotmail? Seriously. Tell me.
  7. Will we see you at ChalkFest?

    1. When I heard the news of Nagle’s retirement, I smirked. I’m okay with all the parties bowing out gracefully rather than having a town meeting to burn them at the stakes. As long as the long-term goal of smoothly running city business occurs…
    2. I think being vocal, especially when you have power, is a tricky beast. We’ve been talking about Pelosi’s call to end all twittering/microblogging by the elected officials, and I understand her point of view. It’s risky to speak your mind when what you say matters so much. One stupid comment by Forrest could damage his reputation and cast a pall on anything he wants to do in the future.
    3. It would be great to hire her on permanently, but I have never met her or heard of her before this, and I don’t know what impediments exist to stop that from happening.
    4. Nope.
    5. Nope, though if we were to get a second vehicle, that would be it.
    6. Hotmail sucks. My mother still uses it because she doesn’t know any better.
    7. F-yeah! And you people better come out and visit with me and admire my art!!! Admire me!!!

    6. Just preposterous.
    7. Yeah. Something about some “citizen journalism” site being there or something.

    1. I can’t help but think that all over the country, government types are saved the embarrassment of public humiliation by being allowed to fade away into the distance. That being said, I can’t yet get my dander up about Nagle. I’ve been at a ton of jobs where the HR person wasn’t necessarily in tune with the daily activities of those they hired, or supervised. I need a little more info. I’ve also come to think that Tipple comes from the Ted Thompson school of management, where he’s not going to call press conferences for the sake of it. I think he’s aware and upset, but you’ll rarely hear him say that.

    2. I think it’s popular when groups are new to “rattle the sabre” and propose all sorts of changes. Soon, reality sets in and it’s realized that a system doesn’t break in a day and therefore, won’t get fixed in a day. I’ll be interested to see what happens.

    3. Don’t know Ann Wirth, but would like to see a process laid out to get some candidates and some fresh ideas. If she’s the best candidate, so be it.

    4. I saw him at the Fourth of July Bicycle parade downtown. Saw Jerry Piotrowski and Jim Rosenberg as well. Tipple was wearing these awful red and white striped overalls.

    5. No

    6. To annoy high-tech sophisticates like you. By the way, when will we get another sophisticate podcast?

    7. Yup.

    6. And another thing, WHAT IS WITH THE COMBINED EMAIL ADDRESSES? I am serious people, it is 2008, it is long past the time when couples ought to have their own goddamn email addresses.

    2. Again, I cannot really give my pair of pennies. But I do know Mr. Forrest was awesome about giving Microcosm the streets of Wausau to shoot, so props for that :D
    3. Que?
    4. Nada.
    5. I will probably never give in to the scooter thing. I use my bike for short distances, and my car for long ones.
    6. You can almost tell the type of person someone is by their e-mail client. As a gmail snob, I can’t help but wonder why everyone isn’t using it.
    7. I did see you at Chalkfest. w00t!
