Five Questions for the Overexposed Dude sitting in a Skiff off Greenland

by Dino Corvino on October 3rd, 2008

1.    Are you registered to vote?  I know we have a lot of discussion about this or that issue, but there is nothing more American and patriotic than voting.  Are you registered?

2.    Do you consider yourself persistent?  Do you pursue a life plan, and keep an open heart to the goals that you set for yourself?

3.    Do you think the world is fair?

4.    Do you think that the City Council of Wausau pays attention to you as a resident of Wausau?

5.    As winter is approaching, what is your favorite winter activity?  Mine is oddly enough peeing in the snow.

    1. Of course I’m registered to vote. Unless there’s a weird thing going on that people have to register again, my name appears in the rolls.
    2. I am not persistent. Not really. Unless it’s something that I really want, in which case, I hang onto it like a puppy dog, shaking it and licking it until it’s finally mine. But I’m relatively flexible and pragmatic about goals.
    3. I think the world has aspects of fairness, but there is too much injustice in the world to really hold up a fairness flag. From an evolutionary standpoint, maybe.
    4. I do not say anything to the Council, so they don’t have to listen to me.
    5. My favorite winter activity has always been cross country skiing, though I haven’t done it for years because I don’t have skis. I also love walking in the snow and listening to the crunch underfoot and admiring the all-around sparkle of everything.

    1. Yes. I have been registered to vote for as long as I’ve been old enough to do so. I think voting is important and I was brought up to believe it it one’s civic duty. Kind of like jury duty, which I think I may hold the world’s record for number of times called and served.

    And I plan to vote.

    2. I am stubborn, or so I’ve been told. I absolutely refuse to believe it, though.

    3. No, I don’t think the world is fair, but when I was very small, I think my parents took me to the World’s Fair … or maybe it was just the State Fair. I don’t think the state’s fair, either. For that matter, I don’t like the state of these affairs.

    4. Not unless I make a lot of noise.

    5. Christmas. I LOVE Christmas. After Chrsitmas, I pretty much huddle by the fire and curse the cold.

    1. Registered? Yes … and voting. But, I think open dissent is just as patriotic, even more so sometimes.

    2. Stubborn? Yes. Yet, compromising to a fault.

    3. The world is fair, it plays no favorites. People can be unfair. Actually they tend to be.

    4. Council paying attention? I haven’t tried to attract their attention, except here on CW … to no avail.

    5. Winter activity? Isn’t that an oxymoron? In the winter, I most enjoy not being cold.

    1) I am not registered to vote but will at my polling place because I JUST moved. Of course I will be voting.

    2) Too persistant over the wrong life plan with a heart so open, it may run the risk of infection.

    3) The world is fair but it would be nearly impossible to return the favor.

    4) A member of the city council used to live down the street from me when I was growing up. His dog used to wait on the sidewalk for me to walk up the street on my way home from school, so I would play ball with him. Can’t remember the dog’s name, but if the City Council is not paying attention, their pets are.

    5) Winter activities are scary for those knee patients. Too slippery. I like tubing. Tried very hard to snowboard and failed. We will see what happens when I get my custom knee brace. I am a menace on skis. Maybe I can join Cheryl at Sylivan for some X country action!

    1. Not a citizen at this time so have donated to the candidate of my choice.
    2. Persistent? Yes. Life plan? No, just going with the flow, and sometimes against it.
    3. Define fair
    4. Not unless I get very loud and obnoxious. It is their job to ignore as many people as possible, otherwise the cost would be overwhelming.
    5. I love to watch the morons in 4×4 SUVs, who drive like indestructible maniacs while using their cell phones, stand by their vehicles in ditches while waiting for help. Nothing cheers me more on a chilly day!

    1. Ya betcha. Right after the hockey game me & Joe Sixpack are gonna jump in our Ford Maverick & head on down ta the poll there ta cast our vote for O’biden…darn right…”wink, wink”. (That was me being sarcastic and you’ll only get it if you paid attention during the debate last night…otherwise it just sounds stupid.)

    2. Persistant to a fault.

    3. No. But I believe it is our responsibility to be stewards of our world to promote & create fairness when & where it is lacking.

    4. The City Council can not listen if residents do not communicate what they want. People complain because this or that isn’t done, or something is done too much or done wrong, but much of the time they aren’t complaining TO the council, just ABOUT the council. If you communicate to the council (and it’s so easy…pick up the phone & call them) I believe they are pretty responsive. If they’re not, fire them next election. Simple.

    5. See Dino…that’s just not fair…peeing in the snow is only a guy thing & we chicks can’t do it without a serious mess. Damn.

    1. Yes I am. Yes I will.

    2. I am persistent, but I don’t neccesarily have a chiseled in stone plan per-say.

    3. Hell no.

    4. Well, that’s a no from me for obvious reasons.

    5. Ice fishing hands down. I also actually like to snowblow.

    1. This is a copy of what I have said previously on the WDH forums….

I will not be voting in the Presidential Election because that is my choice and yes, I am a registered voter…

The freedom of that choice is definitely not apathy in my case. Being apathetic means plainly that you just do not care. I truly do care about my country, that is the ONLY reason I served 7 years of my life in the military. Just because someone doesn’t agree with your position on voting, that doesn’t automatically make them unpatriotic or apathetic … just different.

“People die for your right to vote.” They also die for your freedom to make your own decisions, to do (or not to do) what you feel is right.

I vote when I find a candidate that moves me to. I volunteer time, effort and money to causes that I feel are worthy of my attention but on the other hand I have the right to NOT support or cast a vote for anyone that I do not necessarily agree with. Especially when it is both candidates in an election, whether it is President, Mayor, Dog Catcher (not many of those around any more) or what ever election it may be.

    2. Persistant… doggedly so. Life plans…ummm…no, I’ve never really made any plans to do anything. I am a take it as it comes kind of person.

    3. Life is what you make it and you have to take responsibility for every situation you may find yourself in.

    4. For the most part, yes they do.

    5. I do nothing special because of the seasons or weather.

    1. I am registered to vote. I love voting. I love the process of checking in and taking that ballot and marking my choices and feeding it through the machine. I really enjoy this time of year, even if my wife and I can’t agree on anything about the election.

    2. I am persistent, but I always ask myself “Is this the hill I want to die on?” So many times, I come across people who always want to fight the fight. As for keeping the course, I am always open to the new path. That’s how I came back to Wausau. It wasn’t the plan, but it’s worked out nicely.

    3. The world is not fair, but it’s more not-fair for some, and that sucks.

    4. I’m with Cheryl. I don’t participate so I can’t call them out. I do wish they’d cut the Women’s Community a break though.

    5. I like sledding and snow-tubing at Sylvan Hill. It’s fun, and the tow-ropes are nice.

    3. It isn’t so much that life is unfair, it’s that we are unfair in our expectations of life. We expect to have perfect lives with perfect families, be in perfect health and perfectly met out life goals (see question #2) without any obstacles in the road. And thwn the obstacles appear we are dumbfounded and want to boo hoo and cry foul. That is what is unfair. It seems that those who have never had to face real adversity are the ones who boo hoo the loudest. Life is full of adversity and surprises, but if we expect the unexpectable, we can face it with flexibility, a teachable spirit, a patient mind, and a forgiving heart, and we can develop the psychic toughness and resiliency to overcome this percived “unfairness.” The world has universal laws to keep us in balance. Follow them and your life is a little bit easier. Don’t follow them and your life is more up for grabs.
    5. Plastic sled races down an ice-covered handicap accessible ramp or flinging frozen dog doo at the neighbor’s house with the snowblower (if I can still see the operational directions scrawled on my garage wall).

    1. Yes, I almost always vote, and am happy to do so. This year when I take my disabled dad to vote, I will probably have to fill out his ballot as he is legally blind. Here’s the issue: he will be voting for the OTHER candidate, not mine. Will my hand be trembling? Will I cheat and vote for my candidate?
    2. I am very persistent, my husband says I’m stubborn. But I often get derailed from my goals. I find it so ironic that the only thing in the whole world that I probably have total control over - losing weight - is so hard for a usually persistent person like me. Something I can’t blame anyone else for!
    3. Of course the world is unfair, but there are always those who have it worse, as well as those who seem to have it better in life. I’ve known those who seem to just have one thing after another pile on them unfairly, and not understood why. Maybe it does “build character” but “why bad things happen to good people” is something I’ve always struggled with. I feel extremely blessed, but still wonder why my mother had to have Alzheimer’s at such a young age.
    4. My councilman, Jim Rosenburg, listens to me. As soon as I moved to Wausau from Rothschild 2 year ago, I told him he HAD to change the backyard fire regulations and allow us to park cars on the street. Good job Jim!
If those did not change, I was going to run for mayor.
    5. I used to enjoy the youth and high school hockey seasons (watching, not playing). Now, I’m with Tom.
Come home and flip the switch on the gas fireplace and try not to move to much all evening.

    1. Of course I am. I would be a very poor student government nerd if I wasn’t. I do with I could make all the people on campus stop asking me… it’s getting ANNOYING (especially when you registered THEM)

    2. I’m pretty persistent. That is when I really want something, I try to go for it… that doesn’t mean that I’m not distracted every once in a while…

    3. I don’t think the world is fair. People generally do the best they can, but things could always be better.

    4. Well, seeing that I’ve technically never been a resident of Wausau, I wouldn’t know.

    5. I love decorating for the holidays… and just the cinnamon-y smell of things :D
