Five things to ponder as the leaves wander down

by Cheryl Mathis on October 17th, 2008

Every day I wake up and more leaves have dumped onto the ground. It’s startling how quickly it happens, but I guess life is just flying by me so fast right now; everything seems to be manic and blurry. I’ve been getting to know so many new and wonderful people here in Wausau and here online. Sometimes my journalist background kicks into high gear, and I switch into interview mode. Questions, questions, questions! Like this:

1. Did you do anything special this year to see the trees in peak color? I know some people went up Granite Peak or went for a drive up north. What did you do?

2. I’m in the process of acquiring a piano (once I can find enough people to help me move it). I’m feeling rather sentimental about this. It’s been years since I’ve lived with a piano, but I had faith I that another one would come into my life. I’m looking forward to a Christmas season full of carols. Do you listen to special Christmas music during the holidays? If so, what kind? Do you play your own?

3. If you had an unlimited variety of desserts to choose from, what would you pick as your favorite? For my daughter’s first birthday, we all picked out our favorite sweet treat from the grocery store to celebrate instead of getting a cake. I picked cheesecake with cherries. My husband and son picked out some chocolate-y cookies.

4. Here at Citizen Wausau, we want more of or neighbors to get online and join the conversation. It opens up new networking lines, gives many people the opportunity to speak up, and provides a table for civil debate. What do you do online? Do you have specific sites you go to every day? Do you interact with people online or just look at things?

5. In Wisconsin Rapids, a computer error caused the price of gas at one station to go from 3.47 to 34.7. A LOT of people took advantage of this and gassed up … and told their friends. Would you have done it? Were they just sticking it to the man?

    1. I am colorblind, so this is irrelevant to me.

    2. In general, I hate Christmas music save for Choral music. Big choirs acting as one.

    3. Cheesecake made with honey instead of sugar from Mr Zam Zam

    4. I twitter, and plurk. I have a facebook page and a myspace page. I interact. From what I have been told, too much. Must stop.

    5. I would not have done this.

    1. As with Dino, I am colorblind, so the colors look like leaves. Take a picture one year, then you won’t have to waste gas. Or just look out a window.

    2. I was forced to play Christmas music on the piano when I was a kid. If I have to play “Silent Night” one more time in my life, someone’s gonna have a really bad x-mas.

    3. Right now I’m partial to blueberry pie. Even though I’ve been drinking, I could go for some pie.

    4. The stupid Myspace Apps have me hooked. I also check up on my Bears and the rest of the NFL.

    5. I would’ve been all over that if I had the opportunity. It’s almost like a thrift store. Not that I would be sticking it to the Man, but at least I’m not the one getting stuck.

    1. Nothing special because those damn trees are everywhere doing their colour thing so why travel to see more?

    2. We play various seasonal CDs. We have Bluegrass, reggae, indie and techno xmas CDs so that we can annoy most people somehow.

    3. A selection of oriental fruits. Anyone know where I can get Durian and Rambutans in these parts?

    4. I am in a number of social networks. Plurk for local, Twitter for everywhere, Facebook, MySpace and Bebo for friends and family in UK and a variety of special interest forums from technical to political.

    5. I would have filled every vehicle and container I could lay my hands on!

1~ I enjoy the changing colors of the season but I love the smells even more. The aroma of rotting leaves and woodsmoke brings me joy.

2~ I am non-religious so I don’t go out of my way to listen to any particular holiday music. I am partial to the deep tuba sound of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer during the “Eddie” scenes in National Lampoons Christmas Vacation though.

    3~ Hanuta! Hands down.

4~ I am currently seeing how long I can go without installing the television in my place. The internet is my only gateway to news and missed Greys Anatomy shows. I do socialize a lot online but it has caused me to be a poorer verbal conversationalist, especially on the phone.

5~ I wouldn’t go out of my way but if I was in the area, there would be a small potential for some unscrupulous behavior. It would depend on the day.

    1. Not particularly.
    2. Pianos are so cool - we hope to have one someday as well. For now I have an iTunes playlist of Christmas music that I rarely listen to.
    3. Boston cream pie, chocolate chip cookies from Subway, and cake donuts from Kreager’s. And some chocolate milk. And egg nog.
    4. I interact: Facebook, Twitter, CW, and a couple car forums. But I also browse/read: Ars Technica, Kottke, Daring Fireball, some gaming sites, and a couple of web comics, and lately TPM.
    5. I may have done it if I was in the area, but I pay so little attention to gas prices that I wouldn’t have noticed until I was done filling the car. And honestly, it’s not “The Man” that’s being stuck - it’s the gas station owner.

    1. I am allergic to the moldy old leaves, so I tend to leave well enough alone.

    2. My parents forced me to play piano from the age of 3, well into my teenage years. I don’t ever forsee wanting a piano. I do like singing Christmas songs, though I am non-Christian.

    3. Creme Brulee and bread pudding. The best!

    4. I don’t interact much, a little on Facebook and several horse related forums. Usually I am online to check email and try to leave it at that.

    5. I don’t think I could have done it, I would have been the spoiler that let the cashier know what was going on.

    1. We took a picnic and one of the dogs to Eau Claire Dells and hiked along the river, stopped for a picnic. It was lovely.

    2. I am incapable of playing an instrument. But, um… I LOVE Christmas music. (anyone who knows me knows I’m a self-professed Yule-a-holic.) My family has imposed a strict law that I’m not allowed to start listening to Christmas music until after Thinksgiving, but from then until New Years, it’s all I want to hear. And I love it all… instrumental, choirs, rock and roll, folkie holiday tunes…bring it on!

    3. There’s a Swiss bakery in Fort Worth, Texas that makes a “black forest cake” but it has crunchy meringue, whipped cream and chocolate shavings…it’s not filled with cherries like a German Black Forest cake… It is my absolute favorite.

    4. Obviosly, I check my email, CW and facebook every day. Mostly, I use it to communicate.

    5. I’m the one who gives back the $20 the cashier inadvertantly gave me back with my change. I suppose if I thought I’d be taking the gas directly from the CEO of Exxon/Mobil, I might be tempted, but as Andy said, it would only hurt the station owner… and to me it’s stealing, plain and simple. I still have enough of my moral compass left to know that’s wrong.
