Isn’t this snow a hoot? I love it. So beautiful. I don’t think I’d love it as much if we didn’t have a snowblower, though. I do not have unconditional love for snow. Anyway. Today’s questions come to us from delightful Citizen Wausau blogger, Grinning Soul. Thank you so much, Lacy!
1. It’s time to toot your own party horn. What do you consider your greatest achievement of 2008?
2. As a prior employee of the retail/service industry, I do my best to be nothing less than cordial with those that must serve me. Have you ever defended a store employee that was being unnecessarily berated by another customer? If not, would you?
3. Let’s just leave 8 tracks out of this. What was the first record you ever purchased? What about cassette tape, CD or digital download?
4. A recent conversation with a friend brought up the topic of Wausau and ethnic restaurants. Granted, the variety in the area has increased slightly but more options can never hurt. What foreign cuisine do you crave but usually have to drive to the “Big City” for?
5. Okay, we are all adults here in some capacity and it’s time to fess up. Did you ever eat paste, bugs, sand or any other not usually edible substance as a kid?

1. Getting through Christmas with no increase in debt!
2. It has only happened in bars but should the occasion arise in a store I would not hesitate.
3. In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson on Vinyl and I still have it!
4. Indian, Indian and more Indian! As a Brit’ in Wausau the one thing I miss above everythiong else is going out for a curry. Thai and Chinese curries are different. We need an Indian restaurant ASAP!
5. Yes and on occasion still will.

1. Until I read another post here I forgot that I stopped smoking back in March. No patches or hypnotism etc, just stopped and don’t miss it!

2. One time I saw a checkout employee get sort of scolded by her boss while I was standing in line. And so after he was gone, I said something like, jeez, what was that guy’s problem. I remember I got the blankest look ever: She did NOT want to relate to a customer in that way. So my usual attitude since then is, pleasant but efficient. From my own days in retail, that is what I really wanted, anyway, just to keep things moving.
3. The first tape I remember buying was Public Enemy’s “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back.” I am eternally proud of my good musical taste as a middle-schooler.
4. Oh, how I long for an Indian restaurant! Back in the day, I used to like going out for Ethiopian food, too. But the lack of Indian food is one of Wausau’s very few real deficiencies…

1. Nothing to merit accolades, but this last year I really tried to be nice to people (something I have had a problem with in the past). Hard to tell a difference in how other treat me, but I didn’t do it for them anyways. Oh and one other thing…. I am now without a debt of any kind.
2. Yes, a friend(?) of mine was putting down a waitress for being dishevled and a bit sweaty, but I had to remind him that the restaurant was completlety packed and I saw only two other servers running their tails off also.
3. The 45 of Immigrant(sic) Song/Whole Lotta Love by Led Zepplin.
4. German food! I grew up going to Maders and The Schnitzel House in Milwaukee. I see no strictly German restaurants here in the Wausau area.
5. No, my mother’s cooking was bad enough.

1. Having a son
2. All the time in bars (since I spend more time in a bar than anywhere else)
3. First tape I bought was Metallica’s Black album, I believe, and the first CD was either Rancid’s Salvation or Reign in Blood by Slayer. I have no idea what the first record was.
4. I’m still looking for a consistently good burger.
5. Dog biscuits.

1. Survival. Physical, emotional, intellectual, financial… There are many different kinds of survival.
2. I was at a casual dining establishment and a counter employee was belittled and berated by a shift leader for something ridiculous (though I don’t remember what) and right in front of me! I was amazed at the complete lack of professionalism shown by this shift leader. He was not only rude to the employee, but should have discussed the issue with the employee in private. I told the employee, loud enough for the shift leader to hear, that he did a good job and should tell his “boss” to reprimand him in private and not in front of customers like a professional. (Yes, I realize that this was not the “high road” but I felt the need to express my amazement immediately and there was no one above the shift leader present at the time. I was hoping to make him feel as small and stupid as he made the counter employee feel.)
3. I can’t remember the first cd (yes, I realize the question said record) I ever purchased, but the first one I was given was No Doubt’s “Tragic Kingdom”
4. I miss Thai food. I know that we have a Thai restaurant here in town, but Big City Thai is different. I had some in Seattle once and I have yet to find it’s equal anywhere.
5. I ate glue once, but it really wasn’t that great. I don’t remember eating anything else too unusual. I used to go eat salt out of the shaker when I was a kid though.

Oh boy Oh boy…more questions!…I’m so hooked.
1. Lost 30 pounds = greatest achievement. Gained 10 back = greatest defeat. Damn.
2. Yes I have. Grocery check-out line. The mean customer was adequately put in her place. End of story.
3. Way, way too long ago for me to remember.
4. I agree with timothyp…a really good German place would be more than welcome!
5. I tried a jalopinia popper at Sam’s Club a few years ago. Does that count?

1. I guess I’d better try harder in 2009, because I really can’t think of any major achievements from 2008!
Not a bad year, just a nice, even keel year without many ups, but not many downs either.
3. 1969, I bought 45s of “Age of Aquarius” by the 5th Dimension and “Galveston” by Glen Campbell. And I still have them! Along with about 50 other 45s, including BeeGees, BJ Thomas, Elvis, Paul Revere and the Raiders. And my oldest LP is Bobby Sherman’s Christmas album, circa 1970!
4. I don’t know of any international cuisine that we need, but I miss many of my restaurants from the south, Sonic, Whataburger, and anyplace serving chicken fried steak, okra, and banana pudding. I hear they are getting a Long John Silver’s in Antigo!
5. Just boogers. As a kid, of course.

1) I survived each and every day of each and every month.
2) I am most often the rude guy–and have been for most of my life. If service sucks, I never go back to a place. Never. If it is adequate to excellent, I will return. I do not recall ever defending an employee who was being treated unfairly because my underlying feeling is that they should quit if they are being treated poorly.
3) Records…The Meatmen, “We’re the Meatmen…and You Suck!” or Dag Nasty, “Wig Out at Denkos.” Prolly living with my daughter in a closet.
4) Ya’ll could use a L&L Hawaiian Barbecue. http://www.hawaiianbarbecue.com In my “big city” there is more ethnic variety of food choices than I could ever possibly experience. And all within 25 miles.
5)No glue, paste, or other adhesives. Ate a few lady bugs as a lad.

1. There have been on “great” achievements in my mind.
2. I am cordial until it is necessary to not be. I do not stand up for employees that are being berated by others…they should do it themselves. I have many times.
3. First record I ever bought was a 45 of Wang Chung’s Dance Hall Days.
4. I am not big on ethnic cuisine. I prefer northern Wisconsin rustic, which luckily is everywhere.
5. I really never got into eating non-food items.
