1. If you had to pick one finger to lose, painlessly, which one would you be willing to sacrifice? I think I would get rid of the one next to my right pinky, it never does anything.
2. Where in Wausau will you not go? Or shop?
3. Where is your favorite place to get pie in town?
4. Do you have a library card?
5. In purchasing hand tools like wrenches or screwdrivers or others, what makes a good tool? What are some prominent features that you look for in a DIY item?

1. I would think my right pinky… of course now I will spend the weekend seeing what it exactly does.. so I reserve the right to reconsider come monday.
2. This is best a question left unanswered as I see no reason to say where I won’t go or shop because it would only make sense if I said why.. and saying why could be construed as talking down about a local business – and that is not what I want to do.
3. I seldom do pie… but if I must, the French Silk pie at Perkins would get my vote.
4. I do.. it has to be over 25 years old but I have one… Can’t remember last time I used it. (Do library’s still use library cards – the library where Mrs Rent worked in OK didn’t use them any more.)
5. When purchasing hand tools like wrenches or screwdrivers, look for the name Craftsman on it somewhere. That way, when you break it, just take it to any Sears and they will trade the broken one for a new one – no questions asked. (Well maybe a question if you break something in such a mannor as things normally don’t get broke – ah the stories I have.)
NOTE: My statement in #5 does NOT pertain to power tools, it is generally NOT a good idea to purchase something with a motor that has the word Craftsman somewhere on it.

1. I think the right pinky is also the one to go. Every other finger is a must for guitar and upright bass.
2. There are several bars I won’t go to, a guitar shop I won’t frequent, Downtown Grocery, Wal-Mart, there are alot of other places I won’t shop. As far as areas in Wausau, I avoid the “Nature” areas like rib mountain. Too populated.
3. Can’t think of anywhere offhand.
4. Yes but I’ve never used it.
5. Craftsman is alright, I prefer Snap-on. As for power tools, Milwaukee is high on my list.

1. Starting with all ten fingers: I’d have to keep my thumbs being a mammal and all, and I use my pointers and middle fingers too much to lose. My wife would kill me if I got rid of my left ring finger, and I wouldn’t want to get rid of the right ring finger because of the gap that would result and the fact my hands would look uneven. I think I’d have to get rid of BOTH my pinkies for the evenness factor.
2. There’s a few places I won’t patronize, such a Erbert & Gerbert’s and some of the dirtier gas stations, but they’re few and far between.
3. I hate pie. Ecch!
4. I think it’s in my spouse’s name, and we use it more now that we have young readers.
5. I am a non-tool user, I have one (cheap) power drill and all I could really tell you is it’s orange and black and the drill bits come out if you don’t tighten it hard enough.

Dino, forget any BS about Snapon or Matco, you said DIY and therefore the stupid prices of these tools rule them out. At the other end of the spectrum is the stuff at Harbor Freight. Most of it is crap with a few exceptions, One of my best hammers was bought for $6 at Big Lots.
The best thing to do with tools is to decide your budget and then shop accordingly.
Cheap hammers allow you to spend more on fussier things. You are only going to hit stuff with them anyway.
Craftsman tools are decent enough and easy to exchange when you destroy them, unlike SnapOff and CrapCo.
When choosing a tool remember that it is a hand tool and therefore has to fit your hand. Ergonomics makes a huge difference. When you hold that ergonomic tool, if it feels like you could use it to cave in a skullm more often than not, the tool is the right one. If it feels like it could be made blunt by scratching your arse with it, give it to Matt and enjoy watching him figure out which end to hold!
Summary; You get what you pay for. Designer labels are for poseurs or rich sods. Craftsman stuff will often be the best combination of quality and value. Only buy the really cheap stuff when you are happy to destroy it. If you need you hand held when shopping, give me a call.
P.S. Craftsman electrical tools suck. Milwaukee are OK but I swear by Bosch.
P.P.S. If anyone wants to argue with me, I have been around the World using hand tools and have made my living with them for nearly 30 years. Not only that, I have a $6 hammer with your name on it!

Thanks Boog. I was waiting for you to get in on this. You had once told me about the wrenches you had, and was hoping you could remind me of that story.
It is rare to find a cat like boog, whose tools have literally been around the world, and worked forever.
I like Boog’s stories for this reason.
