Third Time’s the Charm?

by on January 4th, 2011

Here we are in a new year, with a new site! On the surface, of course, it doesn’t look like much has changed – which was our goal. We really like how the site looks and works, generally; we just wanted to trim away some of the features that we didn’t feel were serving their purpose.

What’s Out

Blogs and profile pages, basically. It was a really fun and interesting experiment, both from a back-end nerd standpoint and also from a community administration standpoint. Well, maybe “fun” isn’t quite the right word, but it was definitely interesting.

As a result, you’ll notice that the global nav bar at the very top of the page has changed somewhat; clicking your name (if you’re logged in) will take you to your profile. You may want to take a quick look at that, as you may want to reformat how your name shows up in comments and add a new avatar (the old name format and avatar system was integrated with the social networking software that is now gone).

What’s In

Continuing on the subject of that top nav bar, the “Recent Activity” button on the top right is now basically a parallel of what’s on the homepage. It’s a quick way to access what’s new on the site from whatever page you may be reading.

If you’ve looked at the comments, you may also notice the new Facebook icon. In the overhaul it seemed like a good idea to add in Facebook connectivity, so if you don’t have an account or you just want to consolidate your info, you can login to Citizen Wausau and comment using your Facebook credentials. If you click on the logo it will explain the process, but to be clear, it doesn’t give us any of your private Facebook info or anything.

That pretty much sums it up. Again, a relatively light update on the surface, but it will hopefully result in a much smoother experience.
