What I Read – Dave Nelson
by Dave Nelson on May 29th, 2011
Wausau resident Dave Nelson is a broadcaster, podcaster, blogger, sci-fi geek and technology enthusiast. He produces daily and weekly podcasts for his website. He also writes fiction. You can follow everything he does at http://www.theinterdave.com or via Twitter.
I’m your typical 21st century media consumer. Most of what I read comes from the Internet, either via my computer or iPhone. To tell you the truth I don’t remember the last time I bought a newspaper, magazine or anything made out of paper, besides the kind a person uses in the bathroom.
You may do the same but even before I get out of bed I’m logged onto Twitter, checking the news, in case something big happened while I was sleeping . My favorite site to follow is @breakingnews, which tweets out the huge, important stories happening from around the world. I also follow @reuters and @ajenglish. Locally @wsaw and @wausauherald.
As soon as I’m caught up with current events I’ll wander over to Facebook for a bit to see what my friends are up to. After I’m done reading status updates and leaving a comment or two I’m back on Twitter.
If you were to look at my feed it would quickly become apparent that I’m big into technology. About ¾ of the people I follow have something to do with the tech industry. I also like brainless stupid stuff like @popurls. They’ll tweet out links to “viral” videos, photos and websites. I’m also currently following @oldmansearch which is a Twitter account set up by an 81-year-old man who was told by his son that it’s for search so you’ll see tweets like “Is Alex Trebek really smart” and “weather Indianapolis Indiana.” Yeah, I know, it’s not very nice but sure is damned funny!
No, you’re not crazy thinking that all I seem to be on is Twitter. It’s pretty much the only way I get fed content. I will go on news.google.com once in a while if the Twittersphere slows down. I also have a bunch of science fiction websites saved in my Google reader for information to put together the podcasts I produce.
Once in a while I’ll read blogs too. A couple I always go back to Seth Godin’s, who posts a new one every couple days and my friend @lorilewis writes a blog for a radio industry website. Hers is actually about broadcasting in a social networking and web 2.0 world. It’s also fun to search out local bloggers from time to time. Interesting to get people’s perspective of things happening around Central Wisconsin.
I usually like to wind down my day with some book reading and the subjects are usually sci-fi related. The weird thing is the last couple were called the same thing! “Feed” by Mira Grant which follows a group of bloggers living in a future, post-zombie apocalypse world and M.T. Anderson’s “Feed” about a future where the Internet is fed directly into our brains. And by the way, I bought both of these books using the Kindle app on my iPhone. The screen’s a little small for reading but it’s not impossible. I’d love to have one of those fancy tablet computers like an iPad!
