What Jim Maas Costs

by on November 7th, 2012

Patrick Snyder (REP).  .  .  .  .  .  .    13,008   46.46
Mandy Wright (DEM)  .  .  .  .  .  .  .    13,919   49.72
Jim Maas (IND).  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .     1,045    3.73

Look at these numbers.  It is my recollection that Jim Maas consistently gets around these sorts of numbers.  It is also my recollection that the distance between Republican and Democrat has not been this close in a while.

I am glad Pat Snyder did not win, of course.  I viewed his brand of broadcasting to be objectionable at best, irresponsible and overtly false at worst.  I do not think he would have done well in Madison, under the pressure of an equal media, powerful personalities in opposition, and a real mandate to be transparent.

I am concerned for Mandy for other reasons.  Mainly because running is one thing, but the building in Madison is difficult at best, impossible on many days.

But, let us consider that if the difference between Mandy and Pat is less than 1000 votes, and Jim got roughly 1000 votes, did Jim Maas cost Pat Snyder his chance to be an elected official and not just a talking head?

Jim Maas runs a horrible campaign each and every time.  For a libertarian I think of Jim as the most entitled candidate out there.  He refuses to do doors, do calls, have a positive social media footprint, hold events, seek affirmational press.  Instead what he does is sit in the back of the metaphorical classroom throwing jabs at the Wausau Daily Herald for not paying enough attention to him, when he does nothing at all.  Do nothing, yet demand media attention.

I do not get that one bit.

But, if Jim was not in the race, would a portion of his votes have gone to Snyder?  I think so.  A sort of disenchanted voter is Mass bread and butter, and they would not have leapt to a Union school teacher, they would have leapt to the angry white guy who yelled on the radio for a decade.

So, did Jim Maas cost Pat Snyder the election?
