7000 Questions to bug the **** out of you!

by Boogenstein on May 19th, 2008

1. Who does Dino think you first kissed?

2. Is there really nothing else going on in these parts that we should spend our time answering questions about a dog-park that most have never seen?

3. Should we really be surprised when no invites are forthcoming for a news event when the journalism has left the desktop?

4. Is this now a competition to see whose title gets the most interest because it is more interesting than the content?

5. If I am critical enough will my account be terminated by the blog-police?

6-7000. D, all of the above?

Bonus round going by the name of ‘Bob’

Bob 1. Could the powers that be please stop asking retarded questions and put some posts from other members on the front page? I read most of them and some are very worth while.

Bob 2. Could we please be done with the laughable concept that asking stupid questions makes up for the fact that the author can’t be bothered to find some subject matter?

The crux of my comments fall under “Bob”

    1. I don’t think Dino really cares, I know I don’t.

    2. I’ve been to the dog park.

    3. No.

    4. Possibly.

    5. Doubtful.

    6-7000. Yes.

Bonus round going by the name of ‘Bob’

Bob 1. Did you miss the announcement about the Cw advisory board? Are you interested in helping and advising, or just being critical?

Bob 2. A valid question, yet like objectional TV, one can always turn the boob tube off.

Yes, Mr. B … good points, but as janeal points out, did you miss the advisory board post? We, as a group of volunteers, want CW to thrive and not as a silly question site, but as one where content ranges from the silly to the serious. There has been a lot of “journalistical” content here, but we are not “journalistas” … we’re citizens with day jobs. CW has a post submittal feature. You can write anything you want and submit it; chances are it will hit the front page, instead of silly questions. So, yes, there’s a lot going on around these parts … why not contribute from your own perspective, sources, experiences? You could be a big part of CW if you wanted to be.

    Boog,

Thanks for your feedback. I see the point. Clearly you have high hopes for CW, and in some way I personally am not meeting those expectations. I apologize.

Like Janeeal and Tom said, we have opened the doors, and are creating leadership outside of Andy and myself.

I am a simple man, and I assume that you (since you know me) think my motives are something other than they are.

In response to the question for posts from others, well, we are. We review and post everything we get submitted.

I see you have certainly done your part to help change what you feel are the horrendous atrocities here at the CW.

Why don’t you start writing before you start whining? Oh, never mind I see you made a cut and post back in February. My bad.

Personally, I would just tell you to get bent. Others here seem to have a more hesitant tongue.

Moderated comments are for those scared of the responses they might receive.

For most of you. I didn’t miss the advisory board announcement. My schedule did not allow being involved and there looks to be no change in the foreseeable future. I was expecting there to have been some news about the board meeting, even if only to confirm that anyone showed up. Am I playing the devils advocate? Possibly, but I do seriously hope that this site survives. No offense meant to Dino, but a continued series of questions will do little to attract new visitors and much to put off previous visitors.

Dino, yes I know you but please don’t think that I am questioning your motives. I have seen your motives in action for some years now and would gladly back you up in nearly every case. You are a good man and this site is exceedingly lucky to have you.

Alex, I never talked of horrendous atrocities and for you to suggest that I feel that way is ridiculous. You seem to forget the idea of ‘freedom of speech’ but thanks for your return rant. I’m not even going to go near critiquing your posts, write what you want and I’ll continue to write what I want, when and if I feel like it. The frequency of my posting here should have no bearing on what I say. Some of us have a life away from a keyboard. The comments here are still moderated to cut out the spam and the trackback nonsense. I would never cut anybodies comments, no matter how they might conflict with my opinions. Feel free to add more, this is a free Country after all.

As an after thought. It is only your first attempt to comment here that gets moderated so don’t worry young chap, you can be as rude as you like and see it on your screen right away!

  8. Pack One said:

Actually, my freedom of speech was exactly what I was invoking. I don’t think your lack of posting is directly related to ‘what you can say’ but rather whether I am going to bitch about it or not. If you haven’t made an effort towards contribution, you really aren’t in any position to question those who have.

I have a busy schedule as well, so I despise when people throw out the whole ‘life away from the keyboard’ argument. This is a hobby just like cars are to you. I find it a bit rude that you would compromise a platform that has been generous enough to let me pursue my interests.

If I pissed in your diesel engine, you would respond much the same way I imagine.

Pack One, Insert Name, or even just Alex, please decide on what your name is to save me the hassle of moderating your comments again, it is bad enough having to read them! As for I do hope that typing them is not distracting you from your homework. As for making an effort to contribute, I have been working with this medium since you were in diapers. Since when did I compromise anything? Your logic escapes me but thanks for taking the time to get to know your new enemy.

oldwoodchair, I am so pleased that you are enjoying the spectacle.

  12. Insert Name said:

Sorry man, but if you were working with this medium since I was in diapers then you were quite the writer at age eight. At least I took the time to find out a little bit about who you are, you could have taken the courtesy to do the same. Just for the record, you really aren’t that much older, so you can throw the whole elder bit to the side. Thanks for the traditional stereotype that all students are young.

I think directly criticizing Citizen Wausau and indirectly insulting the contributors on Citizen Wausau is certainly not helping anything. If you’re not helping, your hurting. It’s pretty simple. What I don’t understand is your logic, or intention for that matter.

Perhaps you just felt like being a douche today.

    Who knows?

A tongue in cheek bit of devils advocacy received some sensible comments and unleashed a beast. I’ll waste no more time replying to Alex after this, as he has totally and repeatedly missed the point.

Dino and gang, please forgive me for briefly tussling with the excitable commenter. I should not have lowered my standards. If anyone wants to engage in proper debate rather than name calling, I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

    Boog …

You can glean from some of the responses that CW can serve as a journalistic channel when suitable content is forthcoming, as an “observations on Wausau life” channel when someone has something introspective or insightful to say, as a community bulletin board, and as a source of silly fraternal diversion. No hard and fast rules really. Dino started and maintained the questions feature for 2 reasons: (1) to provide some light-hearted repartee, and (2) to fill the void when other contributions weren’t coming in. Certainly, any worthy post (which is to say, virtually any post) would trump the questions. Reading into your original post for deeper intent, I kind of felt that you were expressing overall discontent with CW’s performance to date. That’s not entirely unfounded. Even those of us who are actively involved with CW are not content with it. We want it to evolve and grow. And it will. Keep checking in.

  17. Dino Corvino said:

I want to say, since I am the focus of the original post, the criticism is a fair one, and I took very little offense to it.

CW is an organic thing, and as such many factors come into play.

I find the back and forth in the comments to be the kind of thing I do not like and hope to avoid. If it is your intention to talk objectively, and civilly, fine. The degeneration to name calling and insults, NO MATTER HOW VEILED, does no one anygood.

As far as submissions, feel free to submit as often as you would like. We read everything.

The CW idea is too good to let it get stuck in a rut. The question idea is a good one for filling in when needed. I thought more about this today and I think that might it be better to ask one big and possibly controversial question to get the conversation going? The questions could be obscure local history stuff, International politics, whatever. For instance, you could ask “Why is it that Catholic priests have a reputation for unsavoury tendencies whereas lutherans do not?” We will then get to know each other with thoughts and ideas, not shopping lists. That way the reader wouldn’t just be scrolling through a mass of random seeming answers to add their own, they would have to read others thoughts to join in.

Whenever one comments somewhere, you’ll go back to see if anybody answered. Comments are all about conversation. Make it worthwhile for people to return and the community will thrive.Any sign of monotony and they’ll head for the hills.

This post was because i do give a damn, no more than that. Could I have sent a private message? Yes, for sure, but no conversation would have taken place. If it upset someone, great. At least they will have cause to think about it.

I would have to say I agree with this. I am all for more reader involvement. Throughout this entire whatever you want to call it, it was refreshing to see more than two comments on a blog post.

If that happened on the front page everyday, it certainly would be outstanding.
