To presume that when a court makes a ruling citing certain legal principles and precedents in play that these would represent the ONLY basis upon which ANY ruling could have been made is a very long reach. What we know is that a case was brought, evidence was set forth and a ruling was made by the court, based on the law. Conclusions that go much beyond that are often pure speculation. For example, if a defendant's lawyer gets a case dismissed because the police violated his civil rights, then he's done his job. The basis of that ruling doesn't mean that the accused would have otherwise been found guilty and it does not become the burden of the defendant to prove his innocence.

To me, the court ruling means almost nothing. Other than it clearly states that the City got off on an immunity technicality. That the City actually wronged her, but gets off cheap. The tax payers are lucky. Very lucky. There, Jim is correct. Why set yourself up for added liability when the court has given you a pass on a technicality. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Run away if you can!

Her going to the City and asking for consideration is somewhat like asking the fox to come protect your hen house. At the end of the day, wrong is wrong. Some get away with it. Most private parties don't. Suing the City is often moral and right, but it doesn't get you anywhere most of the time. The deck is stacked against you and most of the time they are immune anyway.

Give it up, Christine...or get out your checkbook, large. But it's probably throwing good money, after bad. My simpathy to you. You got screwed and never got kissed. Welcome to the club.

To answer dbc's questions...

I do not remember seeing any members of city council at this Friday morning meeting.

Yes, the Mayor was there. The N-2-N committee is one of the Mayor's ideas so not only was he there, he chaired the meeting. (Speaking of cleaning up the city, a large part of the meeting was dedicated to a city-wide clean-up this spring.)

I don't remember seeing anyone at this meeting from the inspections dept, but I do know that this was not the first N-2-N meeting discussing this east side neighborhood group, and I also know that the inspections dept have been in on the conversations. Anne Werth, head of the CDA was there, with ideas on what resources her department can bring to the table to help.

Chief Hardel was not there, but Officer Max LaPorte was, and as far as I am concerned that is better. Officer LaPorte's job duties make him the police dept liason on many projects such as this, and he is truly one of "Wausau Finest". My first interaction with Officer LaPorte shortly after he was hired impressed me. He was putting together a class for rental property owners on how to work with the police dept to get criminal elements out of their properties... and he called me for an understanding of how the process works, what notices can be used, how the PD can help.. etc. I have never been a fan of the Wausau PD in general, but they do have some really good officers... and LaPorte is one of the best.

One of the things that I like about what the N-2-N group has done in other neighborhoods is this bottom up approach. This committee tries to get the neighborhood "buy-in", and then the neighbor contacts the police dept, the inspection dept, the CDA, and other city agencies to come up with plans.

What we don't want is the PD and Inspections coming in saying this is what we are going to do... because that happens to often already now. I want to see these agencies work with property owners cooperatively.... and only get heavy handed when it is clear that cooperation is just not going to happen.

To clarify, I read the part where it said "council members" were there, I just wanted to know if any of the big movers and shakers were there. The ones that have the power to make things happen.

Especially if the council reps from this area were there if they weren't already on the committee.

I may have missed it in the article, but was the city council representative(s) for this proposed N2N area at this meeting to listen and take notes for their constituents?

Was the mayor there to listen and give ideas, offer assistance to clean this area of his city up?

Was the city inspector there to give his input on what he can do to enforce the existing property laws on owners and renters?

Was Chief Hardel or someone from his staff there to give his ideas and support to clean this area up and enforce laws on the troublemakers that are ruining that area?

I'm just wondering who from the city was there and if they said or did anything to show they actually care.

THis comment sadly will have nothing to do with the article. But, I just wanted to say that I absolutely appreciate the great discussion here.

Thank you all for that. This is a complicated topic, and questions were asked, thoughts put forth. Thank you all.

Especially thank you to the elected officials that came forth to discuss these matters.

In the future, I hope we have far more coverage of the city council here in Wausau, and of course these upcoming elections.

Maybe some of you would like to write profiles of candidates?

I recommend not voting for Dan Mcmullen. He owes me $2000+ dollars and shows no sign of even attempting to pay it. He cannot even manage his personal life much less represent your community?
Plus I have witnessed him consuming marijuana, in fact, I smoked it with him and his ex-wife.
I do not feel he is fit to be involved in leadership within our community.
If he would display more responsibility in his personal life I would maybe consider voting for him. If he is so wreckless with his own stuff, what will he do with ours??

I am also glad to see Matt Sann eliminated after the things I read about him on here. I think Matt has great intentions and wants to do well but the childish nature and unwillingness to listen and consider other peoples idealology is disappointing.
Plus, the guy is almost 40 years old and writing silly metal songs/poems and posting them on the internet and just seems childish the way he is so into his radio show thing.
