My Journey Back to Health  Hoping that all the years of fun might be reversible

A bit Angry at Myself

by Dino Corvino on February 21st, 2008

I tried on some pants tonight, and I feel like I am a million pounds away from wearing them. I just feel like crap. I just feel limited by so many things right now, and it really has started to add up tonight.

I have not worked out enough, I have not dieted intensely enough, I have not paid enough attention to what is going on. I have again come to half measures, and half results.

Tonight I went to the gym, and walked on the treadmill. It felt good. I cant go back to the gym at like 630 pm ever again. Its lame. Its like a high school social or something, a bunch of teen boys standing around and talking. Maybe the Y is not the right thing. Maybe I am just looking for excuses. Maybe maybe maybe.

It just feels like shit. Tomorrow the City Pages has the article I wrote, and it is a big public thing at that point, and those people who want to can make fun of me.

I just gotta exercise. I gotta pay attention to portions. I need to be disciplined.

This is my favorite band. My friend Tom Jordan and I were at this show, and hung out with them…

    Chill out, man…

You expect perfection, yet perfection is usually unattainable. I’m a fat guy, but I was a bigger fat guy 2 years ago. I made my biggest strides when I didn’t beat myself up over the day to day little things. Overall, I ate less than I worked off, and the weight started to come off. You didn’t gain the weight overnight, and you won’t lose it overnight either.

You’re in it for the long haul, and hopefully changing a lifestyle. It’s not easy to retrain yourself…remember that.

The question is: Are you feeling better than you did 6 months ago?

    Hang in there, buddy.

Dino: Shawn is right…don’t be so hard on yourself…at least you’re doing SOMETHING…you should be proud of the positive steps you’re taking!

The City Pages articles were terrific!…write more! The Malarky’s stuff made me want to go check it out…but do they serve old people like me??…are the barstools short enough that I won’t fall off & break a hip?…do they sell Rolaids or Beeno there?…is the music loud enough that my hearing aid will pick it up?…just wondering.

    Dino,

I need to chime in here with some rambling thoughts. Slow and steady wins the race. In my humble opinion as long as you are actually losing weight, it doesn’t matter how much. The fact of the matter is that the number is going down. Any weight loss is better than weight gain.

Exercise is a very personal thing. Why do you really need to go to the Y? Is there a way you could get the same thing accomplished at home? A few years ago I dropped my membership to the Y and bought a treadmill. It paid for itself within about a year. I have never looked back, but then again, I am not one of those people who needs to be around people, whether it is exercising or whatever. This way, I exercise when I want for how long I want. From what I read, you don’t rely on an exercise partner unless it is Hershey when you walk.

Shawn makes an important point – are you feeling better than you did 6 months ago? This IS, as the title of your blog states, a journey. There will be adventures and perhaps misadventures along the way. The road you are on is a good one. Stay the course. You may veer off center every now and then but stay the course. This is a long-term process.
