Steel Toes
I am a movie guy. I like to spend my evenings watching movies, of all kinds. Mainly dramas of actors I like and respect, traditionally about challenging subject matter. Not to be a snob, I like Transformers style big budget stuff as well, but most times I want something else.
This past weekend I was in the northwoods, and in the northwoods I tend to rent movies from the Trigs store, on Hwy 70. This was no exception. I picked up two movies, and will write here about one.
It was movie called “Steel Toes”. It was the story of a french liberal jewish lawyer who was assigned to defend a skin head accused of murdering a Pakistani man. David Strathairn stars in the film as Danny Dunckleman. From the interviews on the DVD, it appears that this was also a play that he was involved in. In the role of the skin is Andrew Walker. He is a relatively new actor, and this was sort of a coming out for him.
The film is sort of a conversation. Between the lawyer and the client. It is a young man, and an older man. Trying to make a way, trying to make a move forward. It was interesting to see the challenge that the young actor had to go through, and I assume that these were some amazing takes. It was a process movie. It was a movie about the skin growing beyond the simple idea, and into something else.
I liked it a lot. It made the hours pass easily, and I had a nice time. It was familiar territory, but I liked it none the less.
