Nealistically speaking

Beatin’ the bushes for a little culture & diversion

Input Jack

by Tom Neal on January 14th, 2008

Last week on my Thursday night radio show, I went with a theme: tunes based on some application of the concept of “shake.” Made for a shakin’ show! I’d like to pursue some other themes in future programs and would like to gauge interest in some possibles. I hope you’ll consider giving me some input on this; just submit a comment if you see something you like, don’t like or if there’s some other idea you think would make for a good episode of Roundtrip with Neal at the Wheel (WNRB-LP, 93.3 FM, Wausau, 7-9 pm Thursdays).

1. British blues (Dino will love this)
2. British invasion (first wave in the ’60s)
3. Summer of Love (1967)
4. West Coast psychedelic
5. Delta blues
6. Politics & protest
7. Acoustic
8. Art rock (i.e. King Crimson, Genesis)
9. Top drummers
10. 1968 40 years later

Art rock did not stop with Genesis…Sonic Youth, The Jesus Lizard. Maybe a bit too physical for your tastes

Just has to be things I own or can be loaned to me. When I go shopping, I don’t tend to gravitate toward the Jesus Lizard section. By the way, remember when I asked if you could provide me with the Dave Clark 5’s greatest hits? Can’t find them anywhere (they just got inducted into the R&RHOF).

Perhaps in this politically heavy time, you should consider doing a show with a theme along those lines, some always timely protest songs, some Delta blues like you adore, as well as Guthrie (pere and fils), Dylan, Donovan, Nina Simone and things like “American Idiot” by Green Day; Todd Rundren’s “Lysistrata.”

I think I will try to pull together a politics & protest show. It’ll take a while to research my collection for the top couple dozen representative numbers. I think for tonight’s show I will go into cruise mode; there’s a bunch of stuff I’ve been wanting to play that aren’t thematically tied in any way I can think of.

    Tom,

I like the idea of many of these themes.

Could you please explain what #10 will be all about?

    Hi moose,

good question. I guess I was thinking of a retrospective of the most notable recordings of ‘68 (quite the year!) … and perhaps following up with any recent work by the same artists. but maybe just the ‘68 product alone would be more appropriate since I usually can only squeeze 22-26 songs into 2 hours.

    Tom,

However you handle the topic it will be fun. I was wondering if you were thinking about some of the artists from ‘68 and their recent releases. However, the other approach of simply looking at some of the many significant works of ‘68 and how they have held up through the years would be fun also.

This may work out into two shows before you know it.

Topic number 6 about politics and protest will probably get you more than one show also. Especially if you look at some of the more recent groups and how they have, in their own ways, taken up that torch.

I usually can’t listen to the shows live because I’m working but I do look forward to reading about what you have played.

You’re undoubtedly right that 2 ‘68 shows would be a snap. I’m leaning toward doing the ‘68 show this week, and then a “Summer ‘68″ show later on. The politics & protest show will require me to do some research and accumulation to do it justice.
