Nealistically speaking

Beatin’ the bushes for a little culture & diversion

Artsy Fartsy

by Tom Neal on April 4th, 2008

I presented my first Art Rock themed radio show last night on WNRB-LP (93.3 FM, Wausau) … I say first because it was such a blast, I’ll surely do it again. I’ve heard more than a few disparaging remarks about this genre over the years, and although there’s no shortage of artrocious artrocities performed by players in this field, there are plenty of sublime moments. Here’s the line-up from last night:

Beatles, Within You Without You .. from Sgt. Pepper, the album that got the whole thing started
Traffic, Cryin’ to Be Heard
Pink Floyd, Matilda Mother … Syd Barret’s psychedelic bedtime story
Talking Heads, I Zimbra … what is that language, swahili?
Kate Bush, Waking Up the Witch
Procol Harum, Barnyard Story
Roxy Music, A Song for Europe … Bryan Ferry adds some French lyrics for effect
King Crimson, Cirkus … including “Entry of the Chameleons” … don’t ask me
Creme & Godley, Group Life … former 10cc bandmates harmonize & experiment
10cc, Donna … doo-wop meets outer space
David Bowie, Yassassin
Genesis, Stagnation … Peter Gabriel is fully in charge here
Soft Machine, Pig /Orange Skin Food / A Door Opens & Closes / 10:30 Returns to Bedroom … suite stuff
Peter Gabriel, Kiss That Frog
Klaatu, We’re Off You Know … from Hope, a very trippy album
Love, Que Vida! … love that champagne cork sound effect!
Mahavishnu Orchestra, Thousand Island Park … serene instrumental interlude
Eno, Everything Merges With the Night … ambient and evocative
Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure … gets spooky near the end
Doors, The End … 11 minutes of poetic and atmospheric paranoia

I think music is a good thing.

What a line up! I think “Within You, Without You” changed the course of my life. I was in 6th grade and I heard the instrumental version…that sitar…it blew my mind.

Katie, what a pleasure to see your message sandwiched in with all the insurance spam messages I’m getting here! Yes, that whole album was a mind-altering substance. I was in 9th grade and played hooky from school to go buy it. I’ll never forget that day.

It was a fun show to do. Hope you can tune in some Thursday night (7-9) and then let me know how it sounded. Thanks!
