Time Out for Streaming — Help Me

by Tom Neal on April 14th, 2008

Again, as spring implies that it is approaching and snow recedes apace, I’m inclined to gear up, trudge off and go fishing. More than inclined … sort of obsessed. I’m not a boating fisherman, really (don’t own a boat anyway). I’m a streamer. And I’m still looking for that perfect, isolated spot on a river or stream within an hour or so of Wausau where I can wade with my fly rod or stand on the shore with my spinning rod and hunt for brookies, browns and ‘bows. I’m looking for some woods; or a grassy glen; some moving water with rocks, pools and eddies; a place to park and maybe a bit of trail to trek to “the spot.” So far, it’s eluded me; I’ve tried the Prairie River (but have yet to know the various stretches along its length … I do need to work more on the Prairie), and when I’ve ventured on the Plover River, it just seemed too close to cows and crops and agro runoff for my tastes. I’m intrigued by names like the Tomorrow River and the Embarrass, but haven’t fished them yet. Don’t know if I should. Maybe you can help me (although I fully understand the reluctance to give up secrets of this nature); perhaps just a general direction or the name of a stream and I can take it from there. This summer, my boy and I are heading to the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming … should be some fishing spots there. Meantime … any suggestions?
