Nealistically speaking

Beatin’ the bushes for a little culture & diversion

This Week in Music History

by Tom Neal on April 18th, 2008

Often, when I’m strapped for a unifying theme for my Thursday night radio show (Roundtrip, WNRB-LP. 93.3 FM Wausau), I pull together snippets of musical history related to the week of the show. Gives me something to talk about besides the weather. This week, there were quite a few significant — and some sad — dates to acknowledge. And, hey, it’s spring!

Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs, Wooly Bully … just a good note to start on “one, two, tres, cuatro”
Rolling Stones, Hey Negrita … the LP Black & Blue released this week in ‘76 (first one with Ron Wood)
James Brown, The Payback … single went gold this week in ‘74
Jimi Hendrix, Night Bird Flying
King Crimson, Model Man … Adrian Belew on guitar & vocal (nice)
Black Keys, Keep Your Hands Off Her … from the BKs’ tribute to Junior Kimbrough
John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Bare Wires – Suite … former Stones guitarist Mick Taylor lets loose
Rory Gallagher, Just the Smile
Beatles, Ballad of John & Yoko … recorded by John & Paul alone at Abbey Road this week in ‘69
Counting Crows, Hanging Tree … from the new album, which I’m getting to know better
Martha & the Vandellas, Dancing in the Street … “Summer’s here and the time is right …”
Eddie Cochran, C’mon Everybody … Eddie (21) died in a car crash this week in ‘60
Pete Townshend, Eyesight to the Blind … live performance honoring his first solo show in ‘74
The Doors, Love Her Madly … released this week in ‘71
Paul Revere & the Raiders, I’m Not Your Stepping Stone … their TV show “Where the Action Is” had its last airing this week in ‘67
Hollies, Bus Stop … their first U.S. concert tour opened this week in ‘65
Small Faces, Around the Plynth … from First Step, released this week in ‘70 with Rod Stewart on vocal
Ray Davies, The Voodoo Walk … from his brand-new album
Pink Floyd, Astronomy Domine … live version marking their introduction of their “Azimuth Coordinator” total-surround concert sound system this week in ‘68
The Band, Chest Fever … Hammond B3 organ heaven, their first concert without Bob Dylan, this week in ‘69
Buffalo Springfield, Mr. Soul … their first show, opening for the Byrds this week in ‘66
Counting Crows, Washington Square … another dip into the new album
Skip Spence, Little Hands … former Jefferson Airplane drummer and singer/guitarist for Moby Grape — his birthday this week (1944) and his passing (age 55) this week (’99).
Paul McCartney, The Lovely Linda … April 17th — release of his 1st solo album (’70) and death of Linda (’98)

So if you were listening, this is what you heard. If your weren’t listening, this is what you missed. Join me next week, and don’t miss a thing.
