My Last Night on the Radio

by Tom Neal on May 16th, 2008

How’s that for a grabber headline! Last night, in WNRB-LP’s steamy studio, I did another edition of Rountdtrip … no, not my last one. Theme: eclectic mix with drop-in snippets of trivia related to this week in popular music history. All in all, a show I enjoyed, but that’s not unusual. I hope my listener(s) had a treat as well. Future show theme: for next week or the next, I’m planning a show dedicated entirely to SUMMER. Tunes about summer, tunes that sound like summer, tunes that take me (and hopefully you) back to summers past. I need to get out and find Mungo Jerry’s “In the Summertime” or else it just wouldn’t be complete. So, here’s last night:

Desmond Decker, Shanty Town … superb reggae, “Oh-oh-seven uh, at ocean’s eleven”
Blind Faith, Had to Cry Today … Steve Winwood, Clapton … dueling guitars from 39 years ago
Steve Winwood, Raging Sea … from Nine Lives, released about 10 days ago
REM, Radio Free Europe
Counting Crows, Anyone But You … from their good new album
Ray Davies, Imaginary Man … Kinks’ front man from his brand new album
Sly & the Family Stone, Babies Making Babies … public service announcement?
Gin Blossoms, Found Out About You
Joni Mitchell, A Case of You
Wilco, The Late Greats
Roxy Music, Beauty Queen … Brian Ferry’s poetry and delivery … smooth
The Seeds, Mr. Farmer … in honor of the return of the Wausau farmer’s market
The Stooges, I Wanna Be Your Dog … Iggy Pop does it doggie style
The Animals, When I Was Young …
“When I was young, it was more important
Pain more painful
Laughter much louder
Yeah, when I was young”
The Clash, Hateful
Mahavishnu Orchestra, Birds of Fire
Jimi Hendrix, EZY Rider
Pink Floyd, Summer 68 … in honor of a concert they did this week in ‘71 at the Crystal Palace Bowl in London. Performing in front of a large lake, a number of fish were killed by the loud music.
King Crimson, Matte Kudasai
George Harrison, Brainwashed
Bob Dylan, Absolutely Sweet Marie
Tom Waits, Jockey Full of Bourbon

Let’s all remember Keith Relf, former lead singer of the Yardbirds who died May 14, 1976 … electrocuted while playing his guitar at home. Now that’s a rocker’s exit. Tune in next week.

Have you ever considered making this a musical podcast? That way you could get a lot more listeners such as myself who are usually unavailable at your air time, and could listen whenever I felt like it (especially at work).

    Hello CWeston,

Web streaming and podcasting are on our radar, but we are in need of assistance (financial, technical) and access to bandwidth. Can you help us with any of that? Any advice or idea is greatly welcome. But, 7-9 Thursday nights? What the heck are you doing then?

For a summer show, you can’t forget Eddie Cochran’s Summertime Blues. Brian Setzer does an awesome version of it, if you want to go a cover route.

The Who nail it on the Live at Leeds album!

It will be fun; I can almost smell the coppertone.
