Last Night’s Roundtrip was Exotic

by Tom Neal on August 21st, 2008

Having enjoyed watching The Darjeeling Limited this week, I decided to add a touch of exotic spice to my show last night (Roundtrip, WNRB-LP, 93.3 FM, Wausau). Eastern / Indian / Third World influences in western music might be traced to Beatle George Harrison’s adoption of the sitar and raga styles. But others have and still do incorporate a variety of exotic styles in their western music to achieve that special atmosphere or sound that just says “let’s light up some incense.” So, last night I hope you got out the pillows, sat on the floor, had some tea, lit up some candles and sandalwood cones … as Roundtrip took you exotic places.

Beatles, Love You To … one of the first sitar-based tunes to come along (Revolver)
Led Zeppelin, Kashmir
Rolling Stones, Paint It Black
Jethro Tull, Fat Man
Coldplay, Yes … sort of Bulgarian thing going here
Yardbirds, Heart Full of Soul
The Kinks, Fancy
David Crosby, Music is Love … got tix to see him and Nash at the Grand (phew!)
Kate Bush, The Dreaming … “Band, goes another kanga on the bonnet of the van”
Jefferson Airplane, Two Heads … Grace Slick goes Middle Eastern
Traffic, Hole in My Shoe … Dave Mason on sitar
Velvet Underground, Venus in Furs … one of the hottest songs ever recorded!
Rolling Stones, Gomper
The Byrds, Eight Miles High
Mahavishnu Orchestra, Birds of Fire … great gong intro
Peter Gabriel, Biko
Yardbirds (Jimmy Page), White Summer
Beatles, The Inner Light … pretty obscure for these guys
Incredible String Band, Waltz of the New Moon
Donovan, The Hurdy Gurdy Man
The Butterfield Blues Band, East-West

Peter G. certainly uses 3rd world influences … I’ll look into that.

Katie … not familiar with cheb, but thanks for the suggestion; I’ll check it out.
