Politically singing
Well, well, well … as are many of you, I am in a politically heightened state of mind lately. With war, environment, economy, religion, reproductive health, patriotism, gender, equality, ethics and a host of other issues being bandied about by vocal politicos on both sides, and bumper stickers and lawn signs starting to pop up, I’m planning a political edition of Roundtrip, my radio program on WNRB-LP (Thursdays 7-9 pm, 93.3 FM, Wausau).
Now, I warn you, this will not likely be a fair, even-handed, let-both-sides-have-their-say sort of show. After all, I have creative reservations about the musical approach espoused by the right wingers (i.e. Okie from Muskogee and that Lee Greenwood song about being “proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free”). Since I’m personally based in the ’60s and have remained in an alternative sort of niche, this show is apt to be on the “protest song” side of the equation. After all, I’m drawing from my own meager CD and album collection.
I expect I’ll be pretty active this campaign season, and this is just one way to express my interest in the race. I won’t use the show to present my own views, preferred candidates, etc. I’ll just let the music speak for itself. If you have some suggested tunes, let me know.

Weapon of Choice by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club would most likely fit in nicely if I’m at all deft at trying to guess the type of music you’ll be spinning this Thursday.
Sounds like a good show all the same, can’t wait to see the playlist.

I’m taking some extra time to plan a good show, and to accumulate a fairly broad range of music, including recent things my 16-year-old son can round up for me. So, I’m not pushing it to air the program tonight (last night of the GOP convention); more likely next week. Just off the top of my head, here’s some possibles (and probables).
Cream, Politician
Dylan, Masters of War
Billie Holiday, Strange Fruit
Clash, Guns of Brixton
Elvis Costello, Tramp the Dirt Down
CSN, Wooden Ships
Jefferson Airplane, Volunteers
Stones, Sweet Neocon
Wilco, Christ for President
Lennon, Power to the People, Working Class Hero
Randy Newman, Drop the Big One
Beatles, Revolution
Stones, Street Fighting Man
