Wausau Irritants

One year after the Pub closed its doors

by Mohawk Matt on June 30th, 2008

Well, today marks the one-year anniversary of Scott Street Pub closing down.  Since that year, I’ve hopped to two different employers, tried starting a band, had a kid, and generally just missed the Pub.  I have not found another music venue that even equals it, let alone tops it.  Even the one I work at.  There are a couple good venues in town, but none with the history or general “This is going to be a good night” feel.  And the new big venue?  Not even close to what downtown music was like when the Pub was around.   The Pub was an important part of me living in Wausau, It’s the first place I went to when I moved here.  It’s also the place that I had the most fun in, even before working there.  And working there was a whole different kind of fun. I went out downtown recently, and figured out that without the Pub, there isn’t a fall-back bar if everything else sucks.  But then again, when the Pub was there, I didn’t go anywhere else.

While I do not think that saving the pub was going to do anything, the Pub was doomed. Not because of itself, but because of ownership

I am proud to have done nearly a decade of work at Scott Street, and I think a lot of the legacy of the pub is a little bit a part of me.

I suggest you contact the OWNER of the new venue, and tell him about your experiences at the bar.

What are your fondest memories at the Pub?

One night Frankie and I cooked steaks, and ate cheese cake with Guitar Shorty and his band. No one else.

We just hung out until like 4 am.

While the music was important, the people were more so.

Just as the Fillmor used to have a big dumpster out front for construction trash, they should now rent one and put it out there labeled “suggestions / feedback” … then, after a while, they should dive in and start reading. Scuttlebutt about the facility is circulating throughout the community; people have some very strong opinions. There’s much to be learned. Knowing your audience and accommodating that audience is key to success for any business.

This wasn’t a bitching post about the Fillmor. I was just thinking of the Pub.

I’m with you Matt. I hate driving past the asphalt patch where the pub once stood.

Since I never worked there, I am sure my perspective is different, but I always enjoyed helping Frankie wash glasses and close up for the night once in a while. Watching girls beat up Brady in drunken rage. So many interesting memories and great music. Ah, good times.
