Episode Six

… the girl. Every good story has one. Mine is no different. Some bobby-soxers you just meet and have a good time with, others you just meet briefly in passing. Once in a great while you meet one who ends up influencing the rest of your life. This girl was one of the latter.

Now just for the record, the girl will continue to be referred to as just that “the girl.” I may mix it up with she or her, but, “the girl” is an important part of this never ending story … so get used to it.

I still have no idea how she found me. I was just getting ready for bed and the phone rang. On the other end, the voice of an eighteen year old small fry that I had known since middle school. She was no stranger, in fact quite the opposite. The question of why will never be answered, but this here particular canary had crushed on me for ages. She was two years younger, and if you’re up on your high school drama you should know I wasn’t down with the whole thing. Yet, she persisted for many a moon, and I took full advantage of it. Until this phone call, our relationship had consisted solely of random encounters, usually in the back seat of a car, with little to no dialogue. That’s it, no more.

To this day, I am ashamed of those actions. It was unfair, un-cool, and completely uncalled for. It was high school. It was stupid.

In spite of all of this, the girl, for whatever reason, tracked me down and made the phone box hum. The second she said hello, was the same second I fell head over heels. Maybe it was the two years away from high school; maybe I was just vulnerable at that point in time. Regardless, all the beauty, personality, and intelligence that I had overlooked for so many years came flooding to the surface in what was to eventually become a monumental role reversal.

I have to chuckle as I think back. She had moved to the city to become a singing moose. No kidding, I was falling for a melody making mammal. The girl has/had one of the most amazing voices I have ever heard. So it is tragic that she started, and possibly ended her career as a singing beast of the Northwood. I remember going to watch her, this short little thing with a ginormous moose head, be-bopping around to the delight of the children she entertained. It was more than good enough for me.

So … the moose and I started hanging out.

This would be the start of my first real relationship. This would be hers as well. As far as most first’s go, this one would be no different, littered with unrealistic emotion, unrealistic expectations, and an unbelievable amount of you know what. So, things started to look up. By this time, I had bachelorized my apartment a little bit, complete with a water bed mattress (yes just the mattress) some artwork from a long time friend, and had cleaned the place up just enough so that it had a little chick appeal. Most likely, it had zero appeal, and in all reality she being away from home for the first time, probably really didn’t care. If she did, well, she was smart and never said a word.

These moments would eventually go down as being some of the finest in my lifetime. The “girl” was so full of life and we spent as much time together as possible. As it turned out she was going to be leaving at summers end to attend college some six hours away. It was something I didn’t talk about much, yet it was always on my mind.

By the middle of the summer I had completely changed my attitude on “the girl”. I never could figure out why I hadn’t seen it sooner. She had that rare combination of beauty, charm, and artistry. To me, it was completely irresistible. I yearned to spend just about every available second with this fine tomato, and waited with juiced up anticipation every time she was due to arrive.

Luckily, she came quite often and as the summer wore on, “the girl” became a regular in my apartment complex. Besides being a complete goofball, she was completely fearless to boot. Having familiarized herself with the surroundings, the girl would often come over when I wasn’t around. As she waited, she started to periodically form friendships with other tenants in the building who might be lurking hither and thither. I would find her talking regularly with an odd assortment of people of whom she would subsequently introduce me to whether I liked it or not. So, as the weeks went on I had slowly started to accumulate quite a few casual acquaintances.

Now dear readers, I have promised you many things as I scribe this tale. For the first time I plan to deliver. Don’t thank me, thank the girl. The girl, bless her heart, was always a little strange. This being said, she always had an odd preference when it came to choosing people to spend time with - this author being point in case number one. So it was no surprise when she took inkling to perhaps the most intelligent human being I have ever met. He was a roughneck, loud mouthed, drunk as they come street bum named …

“The Girl”, eh.. and the only visual picture I can imagine of said girl is the moose.. hopefully a better visual develops later in the tale.. oh and here comes I believe the introduction to the first of the Roy’s..

First “real” relationships rock for the most part during the duration…. but they all seem to end ill-fated.

I see her clearly, the girl. Thin, straight hair in a bob cut just below her ears above her shoulders. Not sure yet but I think some glasses too. Stunning in a simple way.

It just keeps on getting better. Alex, finish the book, get rich.

Actually, since this was the early nineties, she had that really short almost spiked cut like the singer from 10,000 maniacs.

Distinct features and strawberry blond hair. She did have glasses, but the kind that made her look smarter.

If you click this … you can get a picture of exactly where my mind was at during this time. God I look young.
